When it was time for her to go back, she held onto Coby as long as she possibly could. He, too, was reluctant to let his daughter go, breathing in the floral scent of her hair, memorizing the feel of her tight hug, and the brightness of her amber eyes.
âIâll miss you, Daddy,â she said, trying hard not to cry. Theyâd already agreed she could join them once a month instead of every two weeks. Silkie had argued the arrangement at first, claiming they just wanted more time to kiss when she wasnât around. Coby had to fight the rising heat of embarrassment that ran up his neck while Ash cleared his throat, wrestling with not wanting to admit she wasnât totally wrong, and making a genuine argument the girl could live with.
âYou need to take that time to practice your magic,â he finally said. âAnd that includes your size changes in the water. If you canât keep it controlled, you could end up hurting our friends, not to mention yourself.â
Silkie pouted, but relented in the end.

Silkie, Ash, and Coby spend some quality time in their Veil pocket, and Silkie gives name to the island chain Coby creates in the heat of rage. When Silkie leaves, Coby and Ash have some long-awaited personal time, and we learn that Ash has been seriously injured.
