I think mainly tri-color! Superheroes existed during this time, but the main comics were either kids stuff or drama stuff for adults. The superhero characters dress a bit differently than they do today.

And yeah, that exact era!

Yeah that was the very beginning of the comic book era during the world wars. But it was that whole "hard boiled detective thing" I think, and I think there was also one about some sort of jungle adventurer...I'm not sure. I grew up watching a lot of black and white movies, so most of what I know of that era has to do with Carry Grant, and Shirley Temple rather than comic books.

That jungle adventurer may be the Phantom, the first ever superhero! But DC really created something when they decided, "Hey, what if we made the hardboiled detective a SUPERHERO?"

That being said, BF takes a LOT of inspiration from Dick Tracy! Hence the mutant villains, and the punny names.
