Promoting self under another comic?

I don't mind people saying to me in my private messages, "hey check out my comic" because I know they must be eager to grow an audience. I strongly dislike when they do it in the comment section. I feel like: a) my comic is not important enough for them to comment something about my plot, characters, art, etc. and they are just there spamming. b) Many times those comments sounds like readers should stop reading my garbage and jump into a better comic.

As a reader I am most likely to visit a comic if:
-The cover and description are eye catching.
-The comic recommended by creators I love.
-The author make a very funny/nice comment on the forums or in the comment section of another comic.
-The author have a pretty profile picture with nice art.
-The author and I communicate and become buddies! -
-The author seem genuinely interested in other people's comic and eventually recommend their work. Like, "wow I can relate, I have a character just like yours". This seems more genuine and less desperate. Out of curiosity I would want to check that out.

Wow, thanks for your experience. Yeah, it's my fiance's comic and I'm looking for ways to support him. I introduced him to webtoon and have been a avid reader of so many comics, and when I went under the comics i hadn't considered how it would come off and how it would affect him. I'll keep that in mind, do you have a comic on webtoons I can see?

I only have a comic in Tapas. I hope I can jump into webtoons soon. But I was kind of ledalying it because I was told that their audience prefer longer updates. How many pages per update you think is good on webtoons? I would love advice!

So part of the problem with advertising your comic in the comment section of another comment is that you're basically using someone else's space for your personal gain. Doesn't matter how big or small they are, that is taking advantage of another person. This is the sort of thing I'd be highly offended by, and if done on my comic it would make me feel like the other person was trying to use me.

Cross promoting has already been brought up, but yeah, that is a much better way to go about things. Build genuine relationships with other newbie creators. Help uplift each other. And always remember building a readership is a long game!

Sometime I would agree to exchange shout outs with other people. besides that I don't like turning my webtoon into an ad space

Actually, although yes it is preferred, there are SO many popular but short comics out there. Especially on discover where it's people just doing their best, and readers understand that. Check out merryweather on webtoon. Prime example of short but popular comics, both in discover and featured!! So don't hold back, you can get a very large audience being in both! And if you wanted to make a banner for yourself, we don't mind exchanging and still promoting across platforms!! I'm sure there's plenty of readers out there that read from both, so we can help each other out! And I'll definitely support you if you start a webtoon!

That's a fair and to the point way to put it. You're right, it's a comic and not an ad space. I know my fiance wouldn't appreciate it either. I didn't even realize the perception, I guess I was just too excited. If you don't mind, do you think you could tell me what you think icf his comic, and if you think it'll be good in discover, like he has anything to worry about?

You make a good point about the long game. While the MAY be interest brought in by my "spam", and at this point I doubt it, that's still only for that moment, and can come with negative outcomes too. But you're right, I wanna help him build goood relationships in good foundation so he has the best start he can! Thank you for your response! If it's not too much trouble, do you think you could take a peek at his comic and tell me, in your opinion, if he has anything he needs to worry about or improve?

As an author I'd find that really rude, since the comment section of my work isn't a free ad space for someone else - it's space for readerы to engage with each other, me, and my story. I'd recommend contacting authors for cross-promotion or some other form of mutually beneficial experience, if you work in the same genre and think that your stories might be interesting to each other's readers.
And as a reader I don't click on random urls in the comments, because I want to have a clue of how the art looks at least.

Author promoting their own comic: Totally fine, preferred even.

People promoting their own unrelated comic without permission from the author: fucking rude and just don't do that.

You make a good point about the desire to see the art beforehand. At realizing how rude I was being, and deleting the comments I had posted, I began trying to strategize better promotion skills. It's good to know that an image should help my chances to attract readers, and probably even authors when trying to get cross promotions. Thanks for your response!

Yeah. Using someone else's space strictly for your personal gain is kind of rude, especially if your comic has absolutely nothing in common with my work. Now I write stuff that's rather niche-y, so if, say, you also write military comics or history comics like a couple people I know here besides me do, of course I'll be happy to cross promote. But the important thing is to ask rather than assume.

And leave comments that are sincere and relevant to the comic you're commenting on. Generic comments like, "Nice comic. Check out mine," are transparently insincere and rude.

You make a good point that the stew so many things that can come off ungenuine. Sometimes I feel if I ask for a cross promotion, even after a very genuine comment to a comic I really do love, it comes off as ungenuine and self motivated. But like you said, it's better than nice comic, check out mines. Also it makes a lot of sense to first try people clearly related to yours. I don't want to come off blood thirsty for attention from any old comic haha. Thank you for the advice!

edit... no, wait. so chapter 1, part 2 of my comic, on Webtoons has one of those comments...... ok nevermind about the Genuine readers comment... im changing it to MOSTLY genuine readers
