He paused a long time before responding, and when he began to speak his voice had shifted into lecture mode, the tone he used when he was teaching, and even though it was an improvement over the hopeless air heâd had before it still was a sign of retreat. âAll my life Iâd thought that knowledge could only be good. Even if it isnât something you expected to learn and even if it tells you something you didnât want to know, knowledge at its root could not be bad. Learning is progress, and progress is necessary.â
Turning to look at me again, he continued, âBut I was wrong. Some knowledge is too dangerous to share. Knowledge can hurt. Even kill.â His eyes fluttered shut for a moment, a weariness in his voice as he continued, âI should have known this truth. History has proven it over and over, but I got so wrapped up in the possibilities that I forgot to ask if my pursuit of knowledge would bring more good into the world than harm.â
