This is an excerpt from Chapter 13 of my story Behind the Light, that will be posted next week.
There are curse words blocked out (Just to be safe. I don't really know if that was necessary) Feedback is always appreciated
Master Regis really didn’t know how to explain himself. Here he was breaking into a house, with three young wizards(for the most part), facing what was a sickly young woman who looked quite furious.
“I’m going to ask again.” She said hoarsely. “Who the **** are you? And what are you doing in my house?”
Master Regis looked at the other wizards, but they were too busy staring in surprise at the woman. “Ah…see I am Master Regis from the Wizard Council-”
“I know who you are.” The woman interrupted sharply then began to make a hacking sound, doubling over in pain.
Sting rushed forward. “Are you alright?” He asked concerned. The woman swatted him away.
“Get away from me.” She said still coughing. Regis glanced at her hands, they were stained reddish-black. Sting backed away looking at the woman worriedly.
“We don’t mean any harm.” Regis said holding up his hands as he came into the room. “We just sensed your presence...in a warg infested forest. We were concerned.”
“Concerned my ***.” The woman had finished coughing and wiped her mouth that was dripping of spit and the same color that was on her hands. “Get out. I’m warning you.”
“You’re not really in any position to warn anyone.” Jaylin, who was still standing at the door with Tacey, said annoyed. He didn’t understand what the woman’s problem was, they were trying to help her. The woman glared at him.
“Please. What is your name?” Regis asked giving Jaylin a warning look to keep quiet.
“None that concerns you. Now get-”
“Yes I know.” Regis interrupted. “We will get out as soon as you answer some questions.”
“Ha.” The woman spat out. “You ***** wizards are all the same.”
Wait a second. Jaylin thought. She sounds familiar.
“We are not all wizards.” A voice said right next to the woman causing her to jump back on her bed. Tacey materialized right next to her, her body glowing providing light in the room.
“What the hell.” The woman cursed. Jaylin’s eyes widened and he took a step into the room.
“Can it be?” He breathed out. “No way….”
The woman covered her eyes.
“Get out!” She yelled enraged. “Curse you!”
“Mara?” Jaylin said puzzled.”Mara is that you?”
The woman stopped her cursing and lowered her arm. Turning to look at Jaylin. The light from Tacey accented her sunken sickly features, but there was no mistake, she was Mara.
“Jaylin?” Mara's eyes grew “What….”
“I thought you were dead!” Jaylin exclaimed, walking towards the woman who looked at him, too much in shock to say anything, to the relief of everyone. “You went out on a mission.” The wizard began to talk excitedly. “You met a dark wizard….we thought you died. How…”
Mara’s face darkened as she turned away. The dark aura that Master Regis saw seemed to grow heavier around her.
“Well I’m alive.” She said coolly. “Barely.”
“What...what happened to you?” Jaylin asked stopping in front of her.
“Nothing that can be fixed.”
“Jaylin.” Master Regis said quietly.
But the wizard didn’t hear him. “The dark wizard...he didn’t kill you? They told me you died. How?”
“Jaylin.” Regis said louder, the young wizard turned to look at him confused. “Open your eyes.” Regis said with a sigh. “Can’t you see it?” Jaylin looked back at Mara, and it all became clearer as he saw the aura that was over her.
“Oh.” The wizard's voice became small as he took a step back. “T-thats….”
“Take a good look.” Mara said bitterly. “This is what happens when you get cursed.”
“Not just any curse.” Tacey said softly. Reaching out as if to touch the darkness around the woman she then winced in pain and quickly withdrew her hand.
“That’s a name curse.” Sting finished.
