Hey all!

So I made a map of the Country the first chapters of the comic take place.
I also have summaries writtten up of some of the towns and villages that are in the story.

I like spreading out my world building gradually, over the course of a number of chapters. I decided to experiment with my current webnovel by adding a quote to the beginning of each chapter. These quotes are from historians, newspaper articles, and fictional pieces of media written in the period that the story took place, and serve to expand the world of the novel. Through the quotes, the reader gradually learns many things, such as:

• The type of inhabitants of the world, and what is important to them.

• How sociologists and historians view the culture of the city and its place in history.

• That the city the novel takes place in is destroyed at some point in the future.

It's a nice way of setting the mood, and I think it helps flesh out the world a lot. You can see more here:

Fictional quotes are one of my favorite tools, especially to build characters/groups before they get introduced properly; from the first chapters of my comic:

"We are proud to claim that since its creation, our London has been one of the few self-governing sectors in The City " ~NLU History Club

"Although smaller changes are possible, a constantly shifting sky such as those depicted in the ruins deep below have been proven impossible, as surely nothing would survive such cataclysm..." ~Astrologers consensus, year 872

"These chassis are the remains of ancient creatures, which once roamed the vast reaches of The City. Now they seldom leave their nests..." ~NLU History Club

Crypticals text or even encoded ones are also fun. Even if they're just in binary.

Interesting how we all hav eout own way of building our worlds

Yup,
but I would also had maps, I like them.
But then,probably in a stroke of insanity and masochism, I decided that space and time folds in weird many ways and made it completly impossible for me to draw even a slighlty accurate map for The City, hell some settlememts inside The City have different speeds of Time, wormholes and repeating stairwells.
Drawing a map would probably confuse more than help. I shoot myself straigh in the foot with the biggest gun a could find xD.

i don't have a map of my novel yet but how i make my world is through the action or even how the mc sees the state of how the demonic realm is in. And yes the world in my novel is the demonic realm and the realm itself is fall through some difficult hard times. Not just by the civilians but also the military and mercenary bands that live there. Which can be summed up in this passage

Saul looks out through the window of the carriage and sees a bunch of homeless people. Guess the demon realm has a bit of homeless in this world too. But some of them had bits of armor on them and rusty weapons like shields and swords. Some of their shields were used as signs that says “Will work to keep the war going.” While others were gathering together to dump their weapons at the end of a street corner.

i love world building, but i like a hard and soft world building hybrid, where there is never a map and a new city or town or forest can pop up anywhere at any time. They learn about the world with the character they learn about a town when the characters go there or is relevant to the plot. or important to back story.

a great example of this is one peice, the world is split in 4 by the redline and the dead sea and between all are endless islands. so at chapter 1000 a new island never mentions before can pop up and it fits within the story no problem.

World-building is all authors' most favourite activity to pretend they are writing when they are not. My novel, is a low-fantasy set in another planet inhabited with humans like us, but our world (the earth) still exists alongside it. It allows me some creativity, but I still have limitation and guidelines.

I try to integrate my world-building in the story, as the story plot is heavily related to the world's history and lores.

Here's the map of Arkham MA drawn by HP himself. I used it in creating my version of Arkham.

And here's Lovecraft country so you know where Arkham would be if it existed. Yea for historical fiction! I try to be as geographically accurate as I can so I can completely mutate the rest of the lore

I try to put my comic book in the reality of a Polish city, Dabrowa Gornicza. It's my hometown. I attempt to present small animals in this world and show the story from their perspective. For me it's important to show parts of my city, but I have to admit. It's the most difficult part. But without it, I think it wouldn't have any sense.

Where my comic ClayFaults is at right now, they're in the country of Venamosia which is a crime filled land which many sections are led by high ranking criminals. in the previous chapter there is an over view of the land with a Tree Of Cain
