Sketchiness really depends on how its executed, and whether it fits the tone of the story or not. I chose to make the art for
Shade sketchy because I knew it was going to be a dark story with extremely intense fight scenes.
Here's a manga that uses its sketchiness to its own advantage - being a story that deals with genocide, cannibalism and a never ending conflict between two very similar species, the art style conveys the story well.
I think that in order for the sketchy style to look good, the artist should 'know what they're doing': knowing the basics and general construction.
As seen from the example manga, the artist has a good sense of shape, lighting, shading, composition, anatomy, stylistic sense, all the necessary skills to make the page look good.
