My guess is it's probably the "Rule of Cool" at play. But it all boils down to which aspect you're focusing on. Are you focusing on the story of an individual who just happens to be part of the syndicate? Or are you focusing on the organization and their exploits as a whole?
As someone who has a considerable amount of "mafia" elements in their story, I mostly highlight on greed, questioning loyalty, and consequences, most of all. Joining these organizations is not without its consequences and punishment for breaking the code. This is a world you do not want to be a part of.
Just my two cents. I don't mind a cheesy mafia romance, so long as it isn't too cheesy.
