I mean a Romeo and Juliet-esque mafioso movie can work, but then it would be more romance-focused than the crime syndicate part. And thank you for sharing your post.^^

Yup, and I think the Romeo + Juliet movie did pretty much that with the setting! (I remember the aesthetic being very... mafioso-esque, especially the obsession with religious symbols and such XD). Which definitely works well for that kind of story, given that the theme of the feud between the Montague and the Capulet and the fact that they bother pretty much in town with their constant fights is also present in the original work and that both elements are perfectly suited for a mafia story XD

Also @DiegoPalacios: you know, I forgot to add it to my post, but I was thinking just the same about pirates and the mafia genre!

Rather than saying "it isn't a proper mafia story" it's more "how does the mafia element add to this?"

Putting that in a frame, because this can be applied to any story genre-subgenre

My guess is it's probably the "Rule of Cool" at play. But it all boils down to which aspect you're focusing on. Are you focusing on the story of an individual who just happens to be part of the syndicate? Or are you focusing on the organization and their exploits as a whole?

As someone who has a considerable amount of "mafia" elements in their story, I mostly highlight on greed, questioning loyalty, and consequences, most of all. Joining these organizations is not without its consequences and punishment for breaking the code. This is a world you do not want to be a part of.

Just my two cents. I don't mind a cheesy mafia romance, so long as it isn't too cheesy.
