Hey guys!
As some of you know, I used to do some forum posts with resources that I found super useful in story and visual creation and I'd like to keep that up.
I'd also like to invite you all to post in these forums anything YOU might find as well.
Lately, I have been studying films and watching things I normally wouldn't and here are some videos I have found exceptionally useful:
Be aware: Some of these videos contain violence as they are "Explained" videos about villains, monsters and other horror things...
^---This guy breaks down different elements in film and goes in-depth on the who/what/where and how. Very useful and I've been enjoying how he explains things.
^---I shared these guys yesterday. They explore negative themes and breakdown of how story elements affect the cast and the environment. These guys are also pretty new and very interactive with their audience. They've been extremely helpful.
^---This guy gets the brain going by asking questions but he also gives pretty good analysis on movie elements. He also did this great video on "Where are all the werewolves?". He has his own opinions on what makes a good werewolf story but, if you're working on something with werewolves in it, you might find that video particularly handy. I also think it's a great challenge for anyone who is in the occult/supernatural sub-genre and looking for a new angle.
^---this guy talks about psychology and has great film and story pointers and analysis. 10/10 recommend.
A few things:
Comics is a visual medium that has more in common with film than it does with novels, that's why I use a lot of these resources to begin with. The "show, don't tell" aspect of our craft is an important element in our creations. However, that's not to say that novelists can't make use of this information. As a matter of fact, this might actually help you to be more creative in your descriptions or, if you were in a bind like I was and have a villain that is largely in the "Lovecraft abomination" side of things, you might find you don't actually NEED a description and let your characters do the 'splainin'.
I hope you all find this as useful as I did and feel free to post what you find! :>
