I've come up with a novella idea for Halloween, expecting to write it maybe into November too. I wanted something more easygoing to give myself a break from my main series. I think it's a pretty cool idea I've got, but it's a genre I'm not super duper familiar with. Paranormal and Supernatural. Let me just run the basic idea down and let you guys judge it. Sound interesting? Feel like there's more I need to include or expound on? It's a rough draft/rough plot and I've only gotten one chapter written. I'm wondering if it's something I ought to continue with. Would love any thoughts and advice you might have!
Plot idea: Homicide Detective Charlotte Hargrave is literally thrown to the wolves when promoted to Hickory Hill’s night shift. Supernatural crimes aren’t uncommon in their rural town, hence why there’s a taskforce dedicated to taking these nefarious criminals down. Charlotte is a necromancer who communicates with the dead and can raise them, along with seeing lingering spirits, much like other supernatural beings can do. But none of them can raise anyone from the dead like she can. Which is why there is a court specifically for them, during nighttime. Humans still exist in this world (which is modern reality) but most of them aren't aware of supernatural beings living amongst them. Those that are aware tend to hunt them(both vampires and werewolves)
Charlotte later meets, Lucien working as a defense attorney for those supernatural creatures who’ve been falsely accused or wrongly imprisoned. (I want to focus on how the court system is setup for supernatural creatures and how it differs from ours) He seems like an ordinary guy, making Charlotte consider he’s human, before learning he’s a werewolf.
The two team up to find a killer, one who’s making damn sure not to be found. Charlotte wants to solve her cold case while Lucien wants to free his friend who’s been falsely accused. It’s not uncommon for the werewolves to be accused of murders and other treacherous crimes. Even amongst the supernatural, they’re discriminated against. Vampires hold a higher rank amongst them, mostly due to their charm and coming from wealthy backgrounds. Having a vampire judge also makes things a little unfair, but he tries to be reasonable sometimes.
