Not if they are inactive, a read for read is better than a sub for sub because it gives you the chance to get new readers.

You won't grow if you are unwilling to put in the effort. Also there are many threads where people read eachothers works and give their thoughts and most of them do very well. (Many do even better than sub for sub threads)
