You crash to your knees as the blinding light fades, the marble floor beneath you cold and smooth. The throne room is vast and silent, lit by flickering torches that cast long shadows along the towering pillars. Guards grip their spears tighter at your sudden arrival, but the man seated at the far end raises a hand, his golden crown glinting in the dim light.

“Summoned one,” the king says, his voice carrying both authority and exhaustion, “our princess has been taken by the Demon King. You alone have been called to save her.” He rises from his throne, his heavy robes sweeping across the floor as he steps forward. “We believe she is being held in one of three cursed places. Listen well.”

The Obsidian Caverns

Far beneath the mountains lies a labyrinth of jagged black stone, its walls slick with moisture and glowing veins of magma that cast eerie light. The tunnels twist and shift like a living thing, and whispers echo from unseen mouths, luring intruders to their deaths. Many who enter never emerge, their screams swallowed by the dark.

The Withered Grove

A once-thriving forest, now reduced to rotting trunks and brittle branches that creak though no wind stirs. The air is thick with the smell of decay, and strange shapes flit between the hollow trees. It is said that the grove itself feeds on fear, but those who are swift may pass through unharmed.

The Shattered Spire

A fortress suspended in the stormy sky, tethered by chains of black steel. Lightning splits the clouds above, briefly revealing its gleaming towers, and a crimson glow pulses at its peak. It is a stronghold of intimidation, but few believe the Demon King would keep his secrets so exposed.

You descend into the mountains, the air growing thick with heat and the smell of sulfur. The cavern walls glisten with molten veins of magma, flickering light guiding your way. Whispers coil around you like snakes, tugging at your mind, but you press forward. After hours of twisting tunnels and unbearable heat, a faint, trembling cry cuts through the dark—the princess’s voice. Your pulse quickens as you draw your weapon. You’ve found her… and the Demon King is near.

The forest greets you with suffocating silence, the stench of decay clinging to every breath. Hollow trees creak and groan, shifting as though alive, their twisted branches stretching like claws. The shadows begin to move, whispering in an ancient tongue, and you realize too late they are not shadows at all. Thorned vines lash around your legs, dragging you into the hollow trunk of a massive tree. Darkness closes in, the smell of earth and rot filling your lungs as you’re pulled into the grove’s gaping maw. No one will ever find your bones.

The storm roars as you scale the iron chains tethering the fortress to the earth, lightning crackling in the black sky. Inside, the castle halls echo with emptiness, save for a crimson glow pulsing from the tallest tower. You race toward it, certain you’ll find the princess, but instead, a circle of glowing runes ignites beneath your feet. A blinding flash tears the world apart—the beacon was a trap. From far below, your body is nothing but ash scattered on the storm winds, and the fortress vanishes into the clouds once more.

A new round, new doors,

The drips of the water fill the dark cave around you. You had been told of incredible treasures within the mysterious cavern that had appeared seemingly out of nowhere. Your family had fallen to dire straights of late, you couldn't resist the call in an effort to help them. Each step resounds through the cave, your skin crawling with uncertainty. You almost worry someone is behind you- ahead of you- even though it shouldn't be possible. The frigid air turns your breath to mist, the lantern in your hand providing the only licks of light. Its creak feels ominous.

Ahead of you, illuminated in a larger portion of the cavern, you come to find three doors.

A Door of Sharp Topaz

It's beautiful, the bright orange and yellow sparkling under the flickering flame of your lantern. The door itself is a deep yellow, the knob decorated with small, intricate designs. Large gems jut out around the door, dazzling rainbows reflect off of them and onto the drab stone around you. It's undeniably beautiful, the door screaming riches. Yet, when you approach, there's a sound like thunder, the shake of the rock beneath your feet. Something large lies beyond.

A Door of Moss

This door is soft to the touch; the deep green mosses that cover it are silken to the touch. Your hand sinks into the vegetation, searching about for the knob. Eventually, you find it, grasping the metal under all the green. You pull with all your might, yet it refuses to budge. You know you have options- burn away the moss so you can get past, risking losing your only light source, or rip it away with effort? Either way, it will take time, time you may not have.

A Simple Wooden Door

It's so oddly simple it looks wrong to be here, nestled among the rocks. Above, as you approach, you notice the cave seems to rumble, bits of rock falling around you. The moment your hand touches the knob, you can hear the crash of rocks, the tunnel behind collapsing in. You are forced to jump through the doorway, hoping for safety beyond.

You push through the wooden door, finding yourself safe outside of the cave, the knob broken off in your hand. Behind you is nothing but a pile of rubble. You escaped with your life, yet the treasure is left behind. Still, you catch a glint of gold on the knob. Maybe it wasn't all for nothing. (I'll give three likes on a story!)

Well, the good news is you live, but the large thing lurking behind the door turned out to be a large dragon. The room is filled with treasures beyond belief. Rather than making a snack of you, you are added to the hoard. Escape quickly becomes a pipe dream. You grow comfortable amongst all the treasure that, unfortunately, holds little use to you now.

The Door of Moss OOO @Liv45
You pull and tear at the moss for what feels like hours, your fingers raw from the effort. After all that hard work, you finally manage to wrench the door open, the moss giving way. You step into the room, finding it filled with bioluminescent moss. Your lantern isn't needed under the light it provides. In the middle of the room, you find a chest full to the brim with sparkling gems, the room filled with precious crystals brimming with their raw forms. You go home triumphant with riches galore. (You win! I'll sub to your story and give up to seven likes )
