If anything, the format of comics will stay the same- digital AND print; I dont think print will die out...
However, I feel that the current state of the direct market is going to damage comics for a long to time to come. The market is not sustainable in its current state- I feel the market should test a model for smaller press/independent comics. The mainstream companies are sucking the lifeblood out of the comics community with over-saturation, exorbitant pricing, and shoddy band-aid tactics such as reboots and "crossover events" every year(not to mention that most of their stories arent really going anywhere).
I feel that platforms such as Kickstarter may be the avenue for comic creators- most comic kickstarters have been highly successful for the past four years that I've been paying attention, and I'm pretty sure it has had a longer success rate. Distribution has been the bane of the small press/independent comic creator, but through Kickstarter(and social media), these creators have found their audiences and have been able to have a somewhat successful career/side career.
I like going to comic book shops and getting comics, but the product lately has been leaving a bad taste in my pocket. I feel like I'm getting my money's worth investing in various Kickstarters that I like moreso than going to my LCS and getting comics there.
As for webcomics- I def feel webcomics is the new frontier. I know webcomics have been going on for while before I started, but I still feel like this platform can continue to grow with new stories for a long time.
