As winter looms, Caesar returns to Rome, leaving his legions in Belgica to construct a flotilla for a second invasion of Britannia. By summer, the Romans, led by the indomitable Caesar, set sail. Aedan, now known as The Owl, plays a crucial role in his uncle’s southeastern defense forces, a testament to his growing influence and strategic prowess.
54 BCE – Sextilis (Aug)
The Lion & The Owl Chapter 5 – 13
At the Stour Reeds, Scipio Servius and his cavalry scouts encounter The Owl and his war party, who attack the arriving Legion’s servile and logistics wagons.
Later, the Briton noble Ciniod, seeking revenge for the death of her husband, the archdruid Fintan, kills Vitus Servius, sending his son into a violent spiral. As the Legions march inland, a brutal Roman known as The Lion (Scipio donning a lion’s mane on his helmet) wages a deadly campaign against the druids.
The Romans confront Cassibelanus and his troops at the Tamesa and are victorious. After this, Briton tribal leaders convene with Cassibelanus, who hopes to unite them against Caesar. Afterward, one of them betrays Ciniod, turning her and Aedan over to The Lion (Scipio Servii.)
54 BCE – September to November
The Lion & The Owl Chapters 14 – 20
Caesar dispatches Skipio and the other Comum-born legionaries back to Cisalpine Gaul before a final fight occurs with Cassibelanus. Aedan the Ancalite, now a captive, embarks on the coastal sea voyage in chains. A sexual captive, he journeys to the Lepontine Alps with his master Scipio, arriving at the Servii villa during the Plebian Games.
