So I've seen a lot of topics asking for references and art help and I thought it would be cool to put all our references in one place so that we can all look around and learn a bit :3

Rules for posting:

post a short description of what the link is about/helps with and then the link
always cite the original source, preferably the name of the artist and/or photographer who made the ressource
you may post your own stuff but no self-promo for the sake of it, it has to be something you made to be educational
Ressources preferably in english or with english subtitles to make them as widely available for all as possible. However ressources that are not in english are permitted, just remember to add that to your little intro info to the link.
ressources for things like anatomy, composition, structure, sketching, line art, colour theory, different painting/craft methods, learning 3D modeling, comic page structure and even story structure, pacing, dialogue, etc are welcomed!

I think if you’ve been an artist on the internet for a bit you’ve probably heard of it, but if you haven’t, it’s an awesome website! It’s a tool for figure studying. It’ll give you a person to draw, you can choose female, male, clothed, partial nudity, etc. Then you can select a time limit for how long you want to draw that pose for before it switches to a different image. I tend to chose 60s for quick warmups and 2 minutes for more detailed studies. I love using it just for warmups before drawing or just to help understand dynamic poses and body shapes better!

I love this website, I don’t use it as much anymore, but it’s great for keeping track of characters, worldbuilding, and writing your story. It offers detailed sections for you to write information about your characters from their age and eye color, to motivations and fears. It’s really good for fleshing them out and you can also create and edit your own categories! You can customize basically everything, I think you can even use HTML in it but i’m not 100% on that. But if you have a new story you need to flesh out and keep track of the information, this website is great! And it’s free ^^

I LOVE this channel! He gives amazing insights as a screen writer about many different topics of story creating. I’ve thought about so many things that I probably wouldn’t have because of him. The videos might seem long but he’s so good at what he does that a 30 minute video feels like 10, and they’re entertaining while also being informational. If you have any questions about writing, he’s probably got a video about it, even things like composition and color themes he touches on in videos. Very cool!

Love a good knowledge thread!

Okay, first up, Alexa Donne. Her writing advice is based on real experience as a published writer. Clear, actionable advice for novelists.

I will never stop shoving this HBomberguy analysis video of why RWBY didn't work in everyone's faces because it's so good. It really looks at how just copying from better stories without understanding why you're doing it or planning ahead properly or thinking through the logic of your world is a bad idea. It's inspirational, it's funny... I just love it!

Want art tutorials? Here, these ones are great. The videos on Colour theory in particular are excellent. Easy to understand, fun conversational tone, advice you can follow. Boom!

You want great analysis of great comics and what makes them tick? This channel is excellent for that. Sometimes even includes interviews with the creators of those comics.:

@darthmongoose Awwww yisss, Marco Bucci! I learned so much from him! Love that his videos focus in on one small thing and then explain it in detail.

I just found this youtube channel from David Finch:

I'm not the biggest fan of his art (just his visual choices, not really my jam) but I think his explanations for various concepts are very solid. I find other youtuve artists will often like, waffle about and basically do an impression of that "draw the rest of the f*cking owl" meme in their "tutorial" videos. They can't really put what they do in words (which is understandable, since you generally don't think in terms of words when you draw), so they just kinda make vague noises about vibes and hope their audience understands. Not David Finch. He really tries to explain what his videos are teaching on a conceptual level with a lot of examples. Like, take this video on making your action more fluid:

I knew a lot of the principles 'cause I stumbled my way into them, but it was neat to see it put into words and concrete concepts.

Unsplash. Giant free stock image site.
freeimages.com. Another stock photo site, less features than some others.
StockSnap.io. Stock photos with a creative commons CC0 license, which essentially means you can use the photos however you want and don’t have to attribute to them. (though its nice if you do attribute)
Burst.Shopify. Tons of royalty free high quality images. Similar licensing to StockSnap.
pixabay. I feel like most people know about this one, but it features entirely free CC0 licensed Photos, Videos, and Music. No attribution required, but still nice to support a giant site with all this content.
Viintage. Big collection of public domain vintage photos.
Gratisography. For commercial or personal use. They specialize in odd, quirky, wild stock photos.
pexels. Great free stock photos and videos. Only a few stipulations of what they don’t allow, but their license info can be found here.
Faestock. An artist and model with a huge amount of fantasy and fae and other types of photos available. Their terms for use are here.
MorgueFile. Old stock photo archive that’s been around a long time.

Posing Sites and Apps:

Adorkastock. Stock photos for pose refs. DeviantArt gallery started in 2007.
FreePhotoMuscle.com. (translated page link click here) Japanese stock photo pose site that includes buff people, but in funny poses and costumes.
CroquoisCafe. (NSFW, nude model poses warning) A stock photo pose site. You should be aware this org has been linked as pro-Trump. I leave it to y’all to decide if you want to use the resources or not. I highly encourage not financially supporting them and trying to support the individual models if you can.
PoseSpace. Extensive library of poses. Some free resources others are paid. I’ve not fully evaluated both, but you should be able to use this all mostly free and get great use out of it.
SketchDaily. This one is one of the better ones out there. You can time yourself, search by pose, clothing options, body type, perspective, etc. All real models.
JustSketch.me. A pose app for any device. Has apps for most devices and a webapp. Customize and pose models/props/scenes.
Quickposes. Pose site that gives you timed challenges to become more proficient at poses.
POSEMANIACS. Ref site with anatomical poses. All the ref pics are of 3D models with only the bones and muscles. Can be helpful for seeing how muscles behave in certain poses. limited to two body types tho.
MagicPoser. A wonderful app that’s great on mobile. Lets you choose size of models, number of them, style, etc. Significant features are use of snap point with the physics engine, adjustable lighting, multiple perspective, 360 angle, articulated hand posing.
Clip Studio Paint Modeler. Free 3d tool that works with Clip Studio Paint. You can import your own data or other models you find online. Not quite an alternative to Blender, but the integration with CSP is very nice.
Egg a Zyoutatsu Atarichan Drawer. (requires enabling flash player or downloading and using standalone flashplayer) Drawing tool for pose practice. The developer is working on an html5 version.
DesignDoll. One of the best pose tool apps out there. You can customize so many things. They also have an extensive collection of ready made poses here. You can use the free or pay once for life and have the poses integrated into the client as well as the ability to export your obj to other programs like blender or smt.

Museum and Institution Open Access sites:

USA National Gallery of Art. Over 50k works available for download.
New York Metropolitan Museum open access. 490k works to browse. Even codes for Animal Crossing New Horizons patterns.
The Smithsonian Institution open access. Probably one of the largest open access collections available online. Around 3.9 million items available to view.
Many More. This article from Apollo magazine has an extensive list of open access museums and institutions from around the world. YES i love this video. It delves into a lot of issues I frequently see in writing.
Same with Jay Exci's Doctor Who Series 11&12 video, very similar humour and argument style. It's five hours long but, it goes over a lot of storytelling advice that beginners+ can/should learn from, with examples for the good, bad, and inbetween. And the video also got me into Doctor Who XD

Posting again, but this time just to bring this Tumblr Post only since I consider its very important

New anti-AI tool from the team developing Glaze that looks to poison prompts and ruin data sets entirely.

The tool can go so far as to trick AI into generating things it didn't ask for. 50 "poisoned" images of dogs into a data set yield typical errors companies have been working to get rid of: weird proportions, extra limbs, etc. When they added 300 samples, it was drastic enough to make a data set that was trained to generate "dogs" into "cats" making the tool basically useless.

It's not out yet, but they're adding it to Glaze and they intend on making it open source.

SketchDaily. Lots of pose references, massive library, is set on a timer so you can practice quick figure drawing. Free.

SculptGL. A sculpting tool which I am yet to master, but you should be able to make whatever 3d object you like with it. free.

Figurosity. Great pose references, diverse body types, lots of "how to draw" videos directly on the site, the models are 3d and you can rotate the angle, but you can't make custom poses or edit body proportions. Free, account option, paid plans available.

Line of Action. More drawing references, this one also has a focus on expressions, hands/feet, animals, landscapes. Free.

Animal Photo. You pose a 3d skull model and select an animal species, and they give you a bunch of photo references for that animal at that angle. Super handy. Free.

Height Weight Chart. You ever see an OC listed as having a certain weight but then they look Wildly different than the number suggests? Well here's a site to avoid that! It shows real people at different weights and heights to give you a better idea of what these abstract numbers all look like. Free to use.
