Well, I suppose there is a balance to find, here.
Our own experiences are true and real more than anything when it comes to feelings, emotions, but not necessarily when it comes to facts.
For eg. I was super surprised to realize how many preconceived ideas I had on life in my country of birth, for example, once I went back there after years living abroad. And I'm a scientist trained (and naturally inclined, from an early age) to fact check everything. But that's not enough to be exempt of (more or less absurd) beliefs (as opposed to actual facts).
I'd say, I like to use my experiences and the special, personal sensitivity that comes from them, to reach out to other experiences, would they be practical or entirely theoretical.
But yep, at the end, what really counts to me is find that good balance of known/unknown - comfort/novelty etc...
