Alright I just saw the Last Jedi and it's now my favorite Star Wars movie. Besides Empire of course. And I just discovered that's a controversial statement. But it had one of the tightest scripts I've ever seen. It had planting and pay-off, deconstruction of Star Wars tropes (and some references to relatively obscure but awesome lore), subversion, and a unique message about getting out from underneath the shadows of legends and masters.

So why are people so pissed about it?

i think a large issue is the sidelining of finn - last movie, he was promoted as the new lead of the series, john boyega gave a stunning performance, and being so charismatic off camera as well, he won a massive fanbase. ntm people being really glad to have another black lead in star wars, which is rare, yknow? so his treatment in tlj has really upset a lot of people who feel betrayed and let down bc they were all here for finn. (personally, i am literally just here for finn, i didnt care about starwars til i knew john boyega was in it. i loved him ever since attack the block. so its a bummer)

theres also apparently a lot of bad characterisation of both luke and leia, which i wont get into bc #spoilers and i cant say i know the full extent, but it ticked people off.

cant say what else... im seeing it next week, then ill have a fuller opinion instead of referring to other peoples opinions.

i thought it was really fun, and i love a lot of the characters, and seeing riz ahmed in star wars was really cool. but also, like, it was pretty naff. the lead girl didnt do a very good performance, there were some major plotholes, esp in the characterisation, and the posing off whoozit wossits extremism as a bad thing, considering who hes opposing, is... bad, tasteless, terribly timed. also this being the only movie katherine kennedy will allow to have this much diversity also being the one where they all die... ick.

I haven't seen the new Star Wars movie yet (I'm seeing it today), but so far, I haven't heard good things about it. I guess I'll form my own thoughts later.

the general consensus ive got is if you can zone out and enjoy the fun, its fun, and youll come out pleased. if you get too invested in the writing and the characters, you might not be.

I haven't done my second screening yet, so I have yet to really form a professional opinion on it. I liked it, but I think the surviving couple should've tried a little harder to get out of the blast radius.

generally the way the movie dealt w the idea of oppression, revolution, and resistance was... kinda all over the place, esp in their lead.

Dude didn't hesitate to torture the Imperial defector. Worse, his people were perfectly okay with ambushing Imperial troops in the middle of town. I'll bet there was a lot of collateral damage, although thankfully that didn't include the ugly toddler.

mm.. i cant say i remember the film well, i just remember knowing that it left a sour taste in my mouth. violence retaliation against a violent occupying force is arguably justified.

tho yh torturing bodhi sucked... but then that was part of posing him as A Bad Guy, doing revolution The Bad Way

I'll give Hollywood one thing: they've gotten really good at producing these effects-heavy movies. Makes me wish I had a time machine so I could screen these movies at a comic convention sometime in the mid-1960s.
