weighing in on the piracy subject as a skint putlocker aficionado,
i think the immorality of it varies significantly in different industries & scenarios. for example, pirating a popstars music makes very little effect, bc what w it being the digital age, money is increasingly being made in gigs rather than CDs and everyones listening on spotify - including, probably still, the pirate. music and books are things u can buy for cheap at charity shops and on ebay second hand, and that money doesnt go to the creator. they can be streamed and borrowed from libraries, which does give some money to creators but.. still. pirating from small creators is a far bigger deal than pirating from big ones obviously. speaking personally ill rip a track or two off youtube, but never stuff by small creators, and i have a growing compound of CDs from small creators & albums wot are Proper Works of Art (lemonade, process, gang signs & prayer, etc)
that said, when it comes to comics, its a lil different. ive been known to pirate a bit of marvel here and there & sometimes pirate smth i love to later buy it when i have the chance. bc its such a small market going through Some Troubles, piracy rly can lead to low sales which take money right outta the hands of artists and writers, esp indie. on the other hand when it comes to print & esp the large publishing houses, theres a lot of research into the hostility of IRL comic stores against women and the limited effect female-dominated online sales have on the statistics large publishing houses look at. so like... if u cant buy comics in print bc money, location, or bc Men Are Assholes Sometimes, pirating ms marvel aint gonna make that much of a difference.
idk i wanna be against piracy generally, but growing up low income, gay, and internet savvy, i cannot find it in me to out and out condemn it. its like musical bootlegs - a kinda crappy but not rly majorly important symptom of a larger problem.
anyway... mayb we should make this a separate topic? interesting stuff
