I bought Clip Studio Paint not too long ago on a sale but I'm just now using. I'm used to Paint Tool Sai and it's my go to program but it felt like if I want to make comics, I HAVE to use CSP. It's very intimidating with so much stuff you can do on it - I was impressed by it. But it feels like it's not for me...I'm going to stick to Sai and use CSP for adding effects and dialogue.

I'm curious about what other people think of it

Love it. Wish I could put my peepee in it.

Only problem with it is that on occasion, it'll randomly freeze and it happens to do it at the most inopportune times. But thats because it has an auto save feature so you dont lose your work apparently. Idk. But I HATE that part. But at the sametime Idk about turning it off because my PC is prone to crashing so its something you gotta live with if you wanna keep that on.

Other than that. All good =3=

I really like it for both comics and illustration work. The asset store is really nice and it really streamlines the process of making comics. I wouldn't say you HAVE to use CSP but its recommended especially if you want to make a comic mostly cause of the asset store and the quality of life features like how easy it is to make speech bubbles, story editor, etc.

Also unlike photoshop it never really lags your computer so that's a plus. Though I've heard from some other people that CSPs brush is a bit worse than SAIs (or that it just didn't feel the same idk)

Anyway, I quite like CSP and i prefer it as a program. But if you want to use SAI to make comics that's fine. In fact, I know a few people who do that and they're doing pretty well.

I’m a CSP whore , I don’t use any other program. Lol I would feel lost if
I had to use another program.
Use what you’re comfortable with.

Oh goodness, I LOVE love CSP. I had looked at so many other applications and found that CSP made the most sense. Some months ago, maybe even back in 2020, it received a comic-geared update that makes creating webtoons hassle-free as it's going to get. It can also accept abr. Photoshop brushes now, too. Everything about CSP makes creation a lot easier, and the interface is more customizable than I've seen in any other engine.

It did take me awhile to get used to CSP. I was switching from Procreate and Photoshop, and I even almost dropped it :joy:. I'm glad I stuck with it. Everyone has their own software preferences, though

As another user said, CSP is not a requirement. You don't have to use it. It just makes some things easier. Some people even create comics with Procreate, which although is great for drafting and illustration, is a bit of a limited hassle when it comes to multiple pages, longer shots, etc, which Paint Tool Sai would do much better with. If comics can be created on Procreate, then Paint Tool Sai will do as well.

It is not the tools that make the artist. The tools just help your flow. ^^

@Zak LMAO all right then :astonished:.

There's a lot going on in CSP and it takes some time to get it set up for your workflow and get used to it. But depending how much time you spend making digital art and comics it's a drop in the bucket and there are so many really useful features that can save you time in the long run. Plus you won't have to flip between programs. It's a bit much up front getting started, but it's a great investment.

There are some really well-done youtube videos to get you started on setting up your workspace - I'd recommend running through one or two of those and experimenting a bit before you decide! Then if you like SAI better at least you know for sure.

I'm in the same boat as you, OP. I bought CSP because everyone raved about it. I can SEE why people might rave about it but... IDK I just don't like it. Doesn't help that it's for some reason got a lot of lag on the brushes compared to any other program. I have a gaming rig, and all other art programs (including Photoshop when I had it) were fine. And the lag isn't unusable, but it's... noticeable compared to other programs. So every once in a while I will force myself to use CSP but I'm just not liking it, and like you I stick to Sai and/or Medibang. (I like Procreate for iOS too, but I don't like to draw on the iPad for long, so I only use it for sketches and viz dev).

I switched from SAI to CSP because 3D models seemed very useful. I've learned the basics of CSP, enough to draw comics. However sometimes I struggle using CSP, I still have problems finding the right brushes for me. Like I can't figure out how to adjust the brush settings to what I want. Sometimes I prefer SAI brushes, because they blend really well. Oh and using CSP to add speech bubbles is really frustrating, I'd much prefer medibang, but I'm too lazy to keep switching programmes xD

Switching to CSP was really painful for me, but now that I'm used to it I like it pretty well. There are some things about it I would change if I could but all in all it's a pretty useful program.

It does have many features that makes comic making much easier. So much that it's overwhelming with how much you can do with your comics

Oh my, now that's quite the reaction to CSP

It's something I might have to take more time to use. I prefer Sai's brushes more than I do CSP, especially with lineart because they come out cleaner.

Yes! Like, I honestly don't like any of the default CSP brushes. I'm sure there's... ones I like out there made by someone, but I have to find them, test them, get used to them. At least with Sai and Medibang, I found 2-3 stock brushes I really enjoy using, and I don't need much else.

Never used CSP, have been surviving with Photoshop and Procreate all this time...the temptation is definitely there though.

Yeaah i dont like csp brushes too! Ive tried downloading some brushes, but im not 100% happy with any of them. SAI brushes were much better

So I like CSP, I do use it occasionally, but my biggest problem when I bought it (which was a while ago) is that a lot of the brushes and tutorials just...aren't in English. So, because I have to buy Photoshop anyway for a majority of my work, I use Photoshop. CSP isn't really a requirement for comics though--you can make comics with pen and ink, after all (and a scanner of course...to put it on digital.)

Another thing is that the font tools are just...pretty bad. They're getting better, and I think CSP is almost there where I can actually use it for a page start to finish, but I mostly use it for when I want a certain quality of linework or if I want to use their other tools like their paint bucket and their brushes that allow me to use like stickers for flora and other detailing (which is not a thing in Photoshop because I think Adobe is trying to pivot illustration needs to Fresco--I don't really fully get Adobe's deal right now. It's a mess.).

Overall, though, as much as I've listed complaints--a great program. Especially for people starting off. They just need way better tutorials because there are some things that I cannot get to work although I am using the same brushes and honestly, it's because my brushes are the Japanese version and I don't know what they say.

I tried Corel Painter, SAI, Photoshop and CSP.
I loved Corel Painter, closest to traditional drawing effect (what I really enjoy when drawing illustration pics, but not really when it comes to draw comics), coloring had a really nice feeling to it.
Photoshop, well... that's photoshop. Illustrator was cool for vector art but I mostly enjoyed playing with Flash a lot.
I got frustrated with SAI, it lacks a lot of tools and I couldn't customize the brush enough for my taste.
CSP has some very useful stuff for drawing, it's seriously a life saver when you don't draw much perspective and buildings for example. The brushes are quite easy to play with, the possibility of customizing them is quite wide even if it takes time. And I'll probably test the animation tool as well.
Talking about flexibility, CSP is the best in my eyes.
