Hey yeah I recently promo'd in r/altcomix, you can only promote your own work there on Wednesdays though, and it's definitely built around alt/indie comics.
I think this can give you an idea of what does well there:
The inked drawing of batman - EW gross 0 upvotes.
My janky psych horror/dark comedy webcomic 7 upvotes (sitting around 89%)
Review of a recently published indie/alt comic 11 upvotes
I wrote like two paragraphs about this and then realized I wasn't making any sense. So I scrapped it all and wrote a whole new set of two paragraphs that don't make any sense.
The easy answer is that "alternative" comics are comics that primarily take influence from underground comics and punk culture from the 80's/90's, are counter-cultural in some way, and seek to undermine or avoid mainstream tropes, styles, messages, and business practices, it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with content or style, but it kinda does too. However, the reality is much more complicated than that, because you can't really define what alternative culture is, because once you do mainstream capitalist culture will seek to either co-opt it for profit or stamp it out. If you wanna read more about this I'd HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend reading the book Notes From Underground.
Like, if you think about it, webcomics on the whole are the new alternative comics scene, yeah that includes the anime-influenced BL comics that assholes are always complaining about being too popular, because they are the alternative to what is published, which, in addition to marvel/DC bullshit is increasingly being populated by what were "indie" and "underground" comics.
EDIT: probably worth sharing my stats from yesterday:
It's worth noting that I've been on soft-hiatus since august, but I'm back to posting regularly tomorrow.
