Most real people, and well developed characters will have a way of behaving that seems consistent to them. What are some (intentional) moments in your story where your characters broke away from their normal behavior, or did something that seemed out of place for them?

The biggest most obvious one for Alicia is what I refer to as her 'Anti-damsel' moment in "Black Bile"

Up until that point in the story, Alicia has always let her emotions control her, and that often meant being incapacitated by her depression whenever it got really bad, but in "Black Bile," she turns that on it's head. She even refuses to cry.

Claudita doesn't usually cuss and she's normally level headed even when leaking blood

Ooh I just love it when characters have an established personality, but something causes them to break. Unfortunately I don’t have any examples from my story, yet. And even if I do eventually, it’s probably pretty far off. :pensive:

For Apparent Secrets1, the roommates break character under specific circumstances (from left to right):

  • Iris: She loses her patience when dealing with her little sister, Lily. The otherwise incredibly soft pushover that is Iris also bristles when one of her friends or colleagues is threatened. She about tore Ryan's head off when he caused Evelyn to get burned by hot tea in the break room at GC&S.

  • Zayzann: Something strange is going on with Zayzann in recent chapters. Some new, unrecognized force is exerting its influence on him, and he's become a bit erratic since then... (intrigue intensifies)

  • Khazmine: Byxx has been able to rile Khazmine with his comments about her being an Automata, which is a serious insult to an Augment. She has a tendency to be ruthless and incredibly cold when necessary, though she takes no pleasure in doing so. Her work partner on Earth, Victor Woggs, has noticed that Khazmine has a predatory, dangerous side to her, lurking buried under a handsome veneer of calm detachment... (more intrigue)

  • Byxx: When pushed to his absolute limits, Byxx drops his friendly, authentic self and can fly into a rage. He almost tore Khazmine to bits on their first meeting after mistaking her for an Automata (straight up robot) versus what she actually is (an Augment, which is an organic being, converted into an inorganic life form. They're a different species).

I had a king character say 'Miss thing' and was so embarrassed when I heard a drag queen say it later and realized this wasn't just a mistake, it was a hilariously bad mistake, like having Mufasa say "serving diva realness" in terms of how nonsensical it was.

is it a musk phase of some kind? just guessing lol

@JoshRaed I'm confused. "Miss thing" just means someone who is an "it girl" or believes she is an "it girl." it's usually used sarcastically, but how is that a mistake?

The whole story of my comic happens specifically because the protagonist broke character. He was someone pleased with his very average life, until the events of the first chapters happened.
Going from an common person with a low-income job to the accomplice of a dangerous delincuent is a pretty big change if you knew him your whole life.

Technically the whole story is about breaking character, so there are and will be more instances.

Something like that . He's acting like other male Paxoram he's met on Zhalterra, but it's happening on Earth, away from the forces that cause this change in behavior. (the plot thickens)

Hanako is normally spacey, gentle, innocent seeming. Imagine Phoebe from Friends if she were more innocent and endearingly kind and sweet hearted. Hanako the drag queen is usually dressed in ethereal ancient Grecian dresses, long hair that brushes the floor, flower or leaf crowns. Hanako is plump and cherubic and loves to wear large fairy wings, since his full drag name is Hanako: the Singing Flower Witch of Hokkaido. He's supposed to depict a magical creature.

After the drag queen owned French patisserie cafe French Cup is bombed and he's caught in the crossfire with his wife and is unable to protect her, his personality takes a 180. He's much more harsh and you see how smart and sharp he really is. You learn that his Hanako personality isn't an act, but a way that he prefers to be in order to cope with the terrible realities he's had to face as an older queer man who grew up in rural Japan. After this new trauma, he's unable to use that coping mechanism. It's supposed to be jarring to the reader, and it hits hard.

100% when Evangeline got utterly wasted and ended up freaking up her ankle. She's a royal knight and it was her night off but she just got flat out wasted.

Maor with an attitude which is rare, then again, he pushes himself to be salesman-like.

Yeah, many of the times the characters break away from their personalities will be jarring for readers and other people in their lives, just like it often is irl.

Last Friday's chapter was a big BIG breaking character moment for Kattar, so I'll try not to spoil too much for anyone who hasn't read it yet.

The sound is an indescribable mixture of a growl and a shriek as he pounds the sofa arm with his whitening fist and I watch him wide-eyed - shocked -

I’ve never seen him so out of control - raving like he’s losing his mind -

Since Mora's whole life is pretending, there's gonna be a lot of space for her to break character, be less put together than anyone in her world would expect her to be, etc. I'm looking forward to getting to write some of these moments.

yet again, only folks who know Essence will understand why this is breaking character, or veering away from the character everyone believes her to have anyway. She is a woman of subtlety

Fighting my first impulse to grab my tutu-wearing toddler and leave without talking to anyone, I walk over to the ginger, who is ready to hand Ayla over to me before I even show her the note authorizing me to take Ayla home.
