I recently made a video about this - I'll pop a link to it at the end.
The method I use to avoid being in a situation where I can't name a character is something I call "name farming".
You can do it with a notebook, or you can use an app / google docs if you find it more reliable.
The idea is to either do it in sessions, or just do it all the time (both if you're dedicated) but either way, you're going to compile names that you can use in advance so that when you create a character you have somewhere to start.
You can use the following ideas to get started:
- names you encounter in real life
- words you happen to like
- specific names of colours
- names you come across on social media recommendations / other records
- names of historical figures
- popular names in random countries
- names of songs, albums or musicians
- first / last names of celebrities
You can build on these based on what you prefer to name your characters by. If you prefer traditional names or if you prefer weird ones, you should adjust it to your style.
The idea is that so long as you have a stockpile of names ready, you'll never have to worry about creating a new character and then leaving them floating around nameless.
Maybe that'll help someone, who knows.
Here's a video I made on it!
