I’m currently working on a litRPG-inspired story set in a sci-fi world, and I could use some help deciding on the main genre for the story when I publish on Tapas. My options are Action Fantasy and Sci-Fi, and I’d love your thoughts on which one fits best!
Here’s a quick overview of the story:
The story follows Ilka, a player in the Obelisk: Ascend game, set in a sci-fi world called VU. The main action of the story happens in the Obelisk, a game world where players fight their way through levels, defeat powerful enemies, and increase their stats. However, the plot revolves around Ilka’s struggles as he plays the game to progress his character and stats in VU, which is the real-world-like setting of the story. (Essentially, Obelisk is a game in VU, but VU also has stats, but is the real-world for the characters like a typical litrpg)
Genre Dilemma:
Action Fantasy: The story focuses heavily on combat, leveling up, and character progression through the Obelisk, which might align with the action fantasy genre. Even though it’s set in a futuristic setting, the core of the plot revolves around combat-driven progression, which is often a staple of action fantasy.
Sci-Fi: The game itself exists in a sci-fi universe, with advanced technology and stats that resemble futuristic systems. But, given the game-like mechanics and combat progression, I’m unsure if this fits more with a sci-fi genre.
What do you think? Should I go with Action Fantasy as the main genre since the focus is on the game mechanics and progression? Or does Sci-Fi better capture the essence of the futuristic setting and virtual reality aspects?
