Cap punching Hitler, i mean that's patriotism in wartime. Something everyone can get behind, especially in WW2 the single most just war against evil Adolf. Comics have certainly always tackled politics, but the issues of today are definitely more divisive, hot button subjects. It'd be odd if no one was annoyed by it. It is what it is. I agree good writing and execution would help.
And maybe there were always people annoyed by the politics in comics. Also, comics back then were mostly a kid thing, kids don't care about politics and may not even realize it when they see it (but they can identify with simple, universal patriotism). These kids grow up, still into comics. When we grow up we become more aware of politics.
Or something. I dunno, it's a theory. A comic theory
