Seventeen-year-old Rowan Calder never wanted to be a mage. Not when magic is illegal and those with it are hunted down and killed. But when the Vanaré, a group of mage-hunting soldiers, discover what he is, Rowan has to leave behind everything he's ever known and go on the run. In dire need of help, he seeks out the mysterious Sparrows, a resistance dedicated to fighting the Vanaré in whatever way they can. Rowan must learn to master his magic if he's even going to have a prayer of saving the world. But that means confronting parts of himself he's tried so hard to bury. And with danger lurking within the Vanaré and even the Sparrows themselves, it's going to take a lot of work before he's ready to save anything.
