âFace me,â he said in a low voice, his gaze continuing to move, his senses expanded in all directions. âIâm here. Iâm not running. Not this time.â
âYou should.â
The whispered taunt came from just over Cobyâs left shoulder, followed quickly by a sharp left hook, but Coby was ready for this. He spun, grabbing the arm, his dagger in his hand. He pushed it against the attackerâs throat, the manâs eyes burning with anger, teeth gritted, fangs dripping with saliva. Coby had been right, he wasnât a creature he was familiar with.
He was a half-feral demon.
âWhy are you here?â Coby demanded.
âIâve come to bring you home,â the demon said, a mocking grin on his face. âA mutual friend of ours is eager to see you.â
Coby squeezed the demonâs arm so hard, the Divine beast grimaced, grunting in pain.
âWe have no mutual friends,â Coby said. âTry again.â
âThatâs a pity. Heâll be sorry to hear that.â
