“You’re still beautiful, sweet peach,” Ash said. “Scars and all.”
Coby gave him an amused smile. “That’s not where I’m going with this, iyshta.”
Ash’s eyes darkened and he dropped his gaze. “I know,” he muttered. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly. “I was careless. I know Silkie blames herself, but it’s not her fault. None of what happened is her fault.”
Coby trailed his fingers down the side of Ash’s face, over his eye, his cheek, the corner of his mouth, before sliding his hand along his jaw, his fingers getting lost in the wildness of Ash’s long black hair. Ash’s kelp green eyes lifted to Coby’s, still filled with regret.
“I scared you,” he whispered. “I can’t forgive myself for that.”
“You lived,” Coby replied, gazing up at him with all the love in the world. “That’s what matters most to me, my Ash.”
Ash covered Coby’s hand with his own, turning just enough to lay a slow kiss on his palm. “So close,” he whispered, so softly Coby almost didn’t hear him. “We were so close to ending this whole thing.”

Silkie, Ash, and Coby spend some quality time in their Veil pocket, and Silkie gives name to the island chain Coby creates in the heat of rage. When Silkie leaves, Coby and Ash have some long-awaited personal time, and we learn that Ash has been seriously injured.
