I'm starting an urban fantasy comic very soon. Does anyone have any advice on world building or cliches to watch out for? To be more specific, the comic will be about a necromancer who is blind and can only see his ghosts. I'm going for a character focused slice of life with maybe a mystery thrown in (can someone judge this too).
If you know cliches unrelated to this comment on them too as they might help someone else.
I can't think of any cliches at the moment, but i just want to say that a blind necromancer who can only see ghosts sounds like a super cool idea to me! I would definitely check out your comic on that premise alone.
@nelmathyria Thank you very much! that's very encouraging. I'm not super great artist, but I'd like to think I'm a decent writer. I've already planned out quite a bit of it, so now it's just a matter of finishing a few pages
There are a couple of pieces of general advice I can give, and they are pretty basic.
Do your homework, keep your magic consistent, and it helps to keep things at least similar to the real world.
I, too, am looking forward to seeing what you do!
wait... if hes blind, and can only see ghosts, what space do these ghosts inhabit when he sees them? is he jus wandering round in blackness and then oi oi ghostie boy? or is it more of like, hes really really really short sighted so everythings a murky blur, and the ghosts are in focus?
Ghosts are invisible to people and visible to him. So he's not really conventionally blind like real life people. Most blind people in this world can't see ghosts. Its sort of his superpower I guess
no i get that ppl dont normally see ghosts but say, the ghost if floating above the pavement and next to the tree. does your man just see the ghost, alone, in darkness? is it a 'my eyes literally work in no way' situation or a 'i am extremely short sighted and legally blind' situation?
like if you had to depict him seeing the ghost, what would you draw? besides the actual ghost?
that. just a white figure in the dark. If you'd like here's a concept art. http://pre03.deviantart.net/a40d/th/pre/i/2017/143/f/a/parsol_by_inspector_spinda-dba4s66.png(just imagine the black background)
ahhhh okay, i getcha. that musta been real freaky when it first started happening - has he always been blind? then itd be even freakier.
yep always, but he only learned to make ghosts show up after turning 10 (just a random youngish age I chose)
are you gonna go into his reaction at first seeing ghosts? if hes always been blind, itd just be like... a grey blob. the ghost would have to help him register colours and shapes as eyes and lips and the rest.
I'm not sure what you mean and I don't want to give away too much. glad you're interested though
i basically mean make sure you look into born-blind people getting their sight, and their reactions, because itd be similar for your character seeing ghosts. beside from avoiding inaccuracy, itll make the character and world more fleshed out and interesting
that makes sense. I'll definitely keep it in mind!
