So a long while back I stopped coloring my comics and regular art (well, mostly comics, I do attempt it with portraits every now and then with mixed results). The main reason being I wanted to sort of master things like anatomy and proportion and other things involving linwork and construction before color so when I got there I knew that if the color wasn't perfect it could still work because the base of it was all figured out. That and Later I found a critique video by sycra that kind of emphasized this as well.

Was this a bad idea? In heignsight I guess I probably could learn and apply both to each other at the same time or go backwards and figure out color first but I'm still not sure... I think it's helped but I'm not about to ask for a critique myself anytime soon...

Hey, Kohaku here.
So I don't think this is a bad idea! Rather, it shows your dedication towards creating more inspiring work. Anatomy and colour are both very complex systems, while it is possible to split time on both pursuits, focusing on one is perfectly fine. There are many who do just fine on only greyscale pallets so don't sweat too much about colour.

Personally, I prefer a well proportioned image before colour. So go ahead and focus on that if you so choose. It is true that a good base design can overpower the choice of colour.

On the other hand, colour is such a complex system in itself, there is a lot of psychology behind colour choice. A simple pallet can work wonders to anything. But it isn't necessary.

Do whatever you want bro! Art has no rules so just do what feels right to you!
It'll be awesome either way~ (did that help?)

As I see it, is better to have a good drawing without color that coloring skills without a drawing to paint (or a very deform one that undershines the coloring skills)

That's what I think. Especially for more drawn-based mediums. If its abstract than you can throw what I said out the proverbial window if you want haha
