What are the Primary Factors in Comic Success? [POLL]

Now here's where I raise my pointy "but..." finger.

I didn't do any marketing for my first 3 series on Tapas, so how the heck did I gain 1k subs? My upload schedule was unscheduled and as hectic as they came. I used a completely different username from my usual online name so that my friends couldn't find me so easily.

quality of Writing
quality of art
characters
marketing and promotion.

I think of it more as a "math equation" involving multiplication:
writing X art X characters X marketing= level of success.

If any of these is 0, your level of success will be 0. If you improve one of your weaker spots, you may get some exponential growth, and sometimes one or 2 of these weaker factors may hinder you, despite having an insanely high level in one of these points. Also you gotta know how to capitalize on your strenghts.

I think if you started your comic a few years ago, it is easier than doing it now. Also, if your comic is on the porn spectrum, that helps! Same thing with people who create comics that are pretty close to fan fiction. You will get readers and they will share.

Because a comic is a visual medium, art.

If your writing is good, if your schedule is frequent, if your engagement with readers is great, cool. But I can't look at something that doesn't visually jive with me. Even if it's good art but I don't like the style. Just no.
