I find it funny that the popularity of mash-ups has come back around. Back when I was a teen in the early 2000s, record companies did this all the time and sold compilations.
Granted it was a short-lived fad (though one of the local radio stations still has a segment dedicated to it on Saturday nights.) , but I still remember it. Not fondly though. I'm a staunch believer in creating content that's not based on things that already exist. Covers are okay, to an extent...but mash-ups tend to just...not do anything for me. Though if people like them, I'm not judging. Just my two cents on the concept.

I actually really like a lot of mash ups, actually. Mostly because some people (like Siivagunner) can get really creative with them and create something really impressive stuff like these songs for example.

Yeah but...did they write the original songs? Did they reinterpret them with new instruments? Or are they all samples from original content?

Like take an 8bit cover of say...My Heart Will Go On, even though they didn't write the original song, at least they made an attempt to completely overhaul it with a different set of instrumental tools.

I'm not so much of a snob that I discredit computer created music as non musical. But...I see mashups as a novelty thing, much like (adding something I happen to love) Happy Metal's Major Key transformations of minor key songs. It's neat, and may have technical prowess behind it, it's still not an original creation.

This point of view extends to cover songs as well. Novelty, and can be done differently, but still not original.

I can't speak much on the technical ability of some mash-ups, but I'll say it's akin to being a chef wherein if you mix the wrong ingredients (or the right ingredients in bad proportions) - it ends up tasting awful. A better way of putting it is, maybe instead of ingredients, rather it's like taking bits and pieces of completed gourmet meals and trying to mix them into something delicious, which is a skill in its own right.

When original works are meshed together seamlessly, it can entirely change the atmosphere of the originals into something that produces new, fresh emotions (although admittedly this only happens with the rare gems I come across).

When I listen to mash-ups, I'm usually listening for humor's sake, but sometimes someone like Silvagunner can actually produce something nice.
