Heck yes, oranges are great! 
Vanilla has an odd history too. It's actually dark brown & kind of bitter to lick but typically used in such small amounts, it blend in well with main ingredients, so doesn't really the color of the food it flavors -- thus it can look like mild color ice creams, cakes, etc.
The plant also originates from Mesoamerica like potatoes, tomatoes, corn, cocoa and peanuts -- so while it common food/flavor in Western culture today (VERY vaguely like United States of America, etc.), it took a long way to get there. No Irish potatoes, no Swiss chocolates, etc. Food history is just super fun sometimes.
