What comics made you want to make comics?

Chapter 337, which I guess must be famous because it's pure sketch even inside the tanko, is so well written it's crazy. Even when he draws sloppy, his narrative is super poignant. Togashi is crazy talented to me, I love his work so so much.
Also, yes, sucks about the health problems. The mangaka profession is a cruel one, in which being healthy is the exception, it's crazy. From what I know, Jump has a special contract with Togashi and he will always have a slot in the magazine. I'm happy that, if one person can have this advantage, would be him.

@mrtoontastic Carl Barks is such a master, right? Carl Barks and Don Rosa are so amazing, Jack Kirby levels of awesome.

While i have only watched the anime, i agree Togashi is a genius. What amazes me about him is how he writes intelligent characters and how strategic thinking affects everything. Also, the depth of the power system is surprising.

The manga is super expressive. He is one of those artists who do the most with the minimum.
HxH is so smart it makes me angry sometimes!! haha I absolutely agree, Nen is the most consistent and flexible power system I've ever seen in a Shonen manga, possibilities are endless and always within the rules.
I love how the whole Yorknew City arc is a revenge arc about the pointlessness of revenge. Togashi is full of smart detail like this, full of clever deconstructions. And don't get me started on how layered and amazing is the whole Chimera Ants arc, holy shit!

ive been outta the loop for like an entire year, i got really fed up with marvel while overworked studying theatre and never really went back. whats going on?

For me I'd have to say it's a combination of three comics. I've been reading comics since I've been little and I think they all influenced me in some way to create my own.

i use to read these history books with comics inside of them, which made me want to convey jokes that way.

I've always wanted to draw comics; my first comic that I bought when I was a teen was New Mutants #53- loved the cover art.

But the comics of course that really made me say "I can do this" were the 1st wave of Image Comics in the early 90s.

I had a ways to go tightening my art and getting better, but by the late 90s/early 2000s I had started making my first comic series- The Clique.

Teahouse was the one that made me want to start making comics. After the series died, I had such a hole left for BL, that I decided to take the journey into comic making.

Yes to everything said about Togashi and his work, that series is just... really amazing and really smart in many ways, the writing was such a huge thing for me to see. There are a lot of points where the manga will get really wordy (its become a joke for people to point out exceptionally wordy pages that are pretty much 5 - 20% of the page is art and the rest is alllll text) but it was... usually always stuff I really enjoyed reading??

Though I'm pretty used to the writing format of shonen starting out lighthearted so you get attached to the characters before they throw you into the serious shit I was not prepared for how well thought out, intelligent and complex (in a good way) all the plot, characters, and even the battles were. Just... completely blew my teenage mind away.

Thinking back, another one that really made me want to make... not so much comics but really really appreciate the format and want to do more character design stuff. Was Spawn. I was WAAAYYYY to young to read that comic (read it at my cousins) but just.... the art was so nice it in... I couldn't stop looking at it and wanted to draw cool looking characters/pages like that too. So it def helped with me drawing more actual people (I only really drew animals before that) and more monsters.

It was so good, and looks simple enough, I thought I can at least create something like this with my art skill and the interesting ideas in my head, but I was wrong, creating comic is way too diffrent from drawing a piece of art, and idea is actually 1029349012348234 light-years away from an actual story.

I would say it was Sailor Moon that really got me into drawing comics. I remember when I was younger, I made comics that were very much so like Sailor Moon.

Card Captor Sakura was another one.

The artists who influenced me the most afterwards were Tanemura Arina, Kaori Yuki, and Fujisaki Ryu.

Oh yeah! I forgot to mention American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang

It was really popular at my high school, especially amongst the asian kids, so I picked up a copy.
It let me know that not all comics have to be an adventure, romance, or a comedic pageant. Comics can be introspective too, and that's a lot of what my stories are about nowadays.

I mean, I feel like everyone is kind of fed up with Marvel nowadays... They lost so many talents. Still some good runs going on, though.

So after Secret Wars, the end of the Ultimate and 616 Universes and the new Multiverse, now Miles was always part of main continuity, which kind of undermines part of what makes him special. Bendis came up with a pretty nice angle for the character. Miles is growing up and things are not as cool as they once were (Civil War II was pretty big for Miles), so maybe he shouldn't be Spiderman anymore. Maybe the reason he feels things are derailing is because he was not supposed to be Spiderman, he was supposed to be something else.
Because if Miles exists in main continuity, Peter Parker never died and he never had to step up. He got spider powers, so he became Spiderman. He didn't need to. And he concludes something he didn't before: how Spiderman is so personal to Peter Parker. Spiderman is Peter's pain, not his.
So Bendis has been hinting that Miles will become something else, branch out and make his own mark, his own legacy. Something about super espionage has been brought up.
I feel like Bendis would want to end his run with Miles becoming something unique or at least redefining his role as Spidey. I don't know if Marvel will allow it, since there's even a Miles movie coming up, but I mean, 18 years. Maybe they feel he earned it.

These last Bendis months on Marvel have been crazy. He's been using his last stories to tie up themes that ran along all of his Marvel stories. He used Spidermen II to tie up his Ultimate work, Defenders to tie up his super groups themes and Jessica Jones is one issue to end and he basically wrote a last story for his character. End of an era stuff.

@Shanny8 Let people say what they want of 90's comics, but they're still super kinetic! From Image 1st wave, Erik Larsen remains a favorite (though I love 80's Silvestri)

@TACOBERTO Watchmen will always be super impressive, right? Too many layers to count!

@EntropicalForest All Star Superman came later, after I just wanted to do comics, but it's the series I always come back for inspiration. It's the gift that keeps on giving. The best story for my favorite character ever.
Also, how cool is East of West, hm? Really pumped for this last year. Hickman is a beast and I miss him so much.

@joannekwan My first contact with Gene Luen Yang was his Avatar stories and they were so good! I was happy when they got him to write Superman and his Superman of China is a delight! I'll go after this one too, seems great. A shame the Brazilian edition is kind of expensive though...

As for my own comic inspirations. Someone already mentioned Calvin and Hobbes, so I'll skip that (despite it getting me into cartooning).

My biggest inspiration for comics, rather than strips (I will make the distinction), was likely X/1999 by CLAMP

For you BL lovers out there, it definitely had some of that <3!! But, it was an epic tale of two forces dueling each other for control of the Earth. Very supernatural, very awesome. Each character had his/her own arc. I loved it. Lots of saucy teen romance.

For later influences, and my re-invigoration into adventure and fantasy comics, I have Mouseguard to thank~

Seriously one of the best fantasy adventures out there. The stories are simple, yet filled with so much heart. Not to mention, the art is amazing! Seriously check it out, if you haven't already.
