What do you do when a project gets too big?

Hey,

I haven't been by the forums in a while. I just wanted to drop. I'm currently working on two comic series and I'm not going to pretend like it isn't a lot. It's a learning process that has been rewarding at times but I can't shake off this desire to turn away from one or both of my comic series. One of my series is really popular and easier to update than the other. The other series has really long issues that I don't feel fit the medium of webcomics.

I guess the point is to set up the following question; what do you do when a project gets too big? What do you do when you can no longer manage a project that seems way too overwhelming to work on?

The most simple answer is to focus on the comic that is bringing in the numbers. Doesn't mean it's the easiest answer though. It's probably time to assess:

If you can do both?

If you want to do both?

Can the comic that is not suited for webcomics able to be changed to suite the medium or should something else be done with it instead?

Is this feeling burnout from working too hard on too much?

Could it be managed with some time away and adjustments to the working process?

I spent the first few years for my webcomic work juggling two projects at once. My long term comic and a oneshot. After the the third year of doing that I realized I may have been doing a disservice to my long term project by trying to boost my skills with two projects. I could do and did do it but I don't know that I should've done it.

What project is bringing the most joy? Work on that one. If neither are, put them on the back burner. Unless you've got major contract issues binding you to a project time frame, take as much as you need.

Taking uploading completely out of the equation, is there a schedule that will work out best for you so you can keep up the momentum on both pieces? Alternating weekly? Biweekly?

As someone who has multiple who has multiple WIPs on the pipeline, if you don't want to work on a story, you're either going to half ass it or give up on it. So might as well work on it when you're in the proper headspace to give it the attention it's due.

Make all my future projects part of the same universe as the one I'm currently writing.

I’m currently working on 6 projects right now. And they’re all apart of the same universe of stories. But I treat them in order of priority. Some of the stories haven’t updated in 2 years, whereas some of them updated last month. I focus on the stories I want to work on, and the others I work on every once in a while when I feel like. Maybe you can do the same.

If I were in your situation (and I'm reading it correctly) I'd personally focus on the easy-to-update series until it finishes, and shelve the second series for after the first one concludes. (Maybe by then you'd be less attached to it being in the webcomic medium if it really doesn't fit (since you haven't updated it for ages anyway), and you may even have a better idea of what medium you DO want it to be in :])

I personally have a few big comics I want to do, and have decided to work on the shortest one first. I find I'm getting more patient as I get older; the span of one year seems to feel shorter and shorter so whereas taking 10 years to finish a series feels daunting to me now, it will probably feel less daunting a few years later once I've finished bitwam
