What does your female lead do that's different from how female leads are usually portrayed? (How does she break away from the mold)

Mine quite the opposite Riona speaks her mind but also closed off. She'll eventually learn that it OKAY to cry and learn that she doesn't always have to be okay.

She has no one left she can call a friend or family so her only motivation to live is revenge. But despite not being physically or mentally fine she keeps on telling herself she is fine. Which will either lead to her self destruction or her finally healing and finding peace.

I think Leia breaks away from the norm in a lot of ways in that her focus is helping her little brother most of the story. She cares about him more than any other person in the world, so he basically becomes the purpose of her life for quite some time. I don't know many stories where siblings are extremely central to the plot, but romance becomes less important in "Rigamarole" because the male and female lead are brother and sister.

Leia also just kind of grimly accepts most people's opinions of her without letting it phase her. She knows they judge her, she's not really happy about it, and it's not that she doesn't care, but just that she chooses not to let it matter as long as she and her brother are safe.

I also think the fact that Leia seems pretty tomboyish, without that being the point of the story, or it ever being a "tomboy to pretty girl" thing is a pretty interesting role. She's not trying to fake anything, she has delicate moments and she comes off as hard as other times, but I think this is a pretty reasonable representation of how many girl can be tough and weak intermittently with out it being an attitude she's "putting on." she's basically the knight in shining armor in her story, despite it being in a modern day setting, but the role she plays doesn't take away the fact that she still likes the color pink, still likes writing and reading romance (though it sometimes embarrasses her.)

Basically the things about her that are traditionally considered girly aren't mutually exclusive to her traits that would be considered boyish.

I think this comes through very clearly in the fact that she has a Barbie doll and an Indiana Jones figurine sitting on her shelf beside each other. And I also think it pretty clearly represents me, as the mixture of my yin and yang traits has always been one of my "quirky" facets I was very proud of. It's nice to see the way it made itself into a character, though I hadn't set out writing to make her like me.

My female lead spends her whole life TRYING to be passive. She isn't naturally timid or hesitant or people pleasing, but she doesn't want people to think she's cold, or mean or scary so she tries to seem as passive as possible to avoid stepping on peoples toes, or offending them.

I think the female character who is really passive is a common idea, but one trying to be passive intentionally I only know of like one other story where that's the case. And in the case of my lead, Essence, it isn't to cover up her evil past.

Might as well just throw it out there, though Essence doesn't have a choice about what she looks like, to a certain extent anyway, so it's not really her 'doing' anything but Essence is very tall, very dark in complexion, with natural hair, small slanted eyes, and little to curves. I think her visual design is very striking and almost magical looking this way and the male lead agrees lol.

She's the heroine of a romance but just became a "mother" in the middle of it. I think that's a little out of the ordinary lol.

Usually main characters tend to be shy and unpopular. Ruby is actually extroverted and very popular. She does have slight behavioral issues, but she went to therapy to sort it out. Despite her father being dead (A common trope) her mom isn't abusive in any way. Her mother is kind and supportive. I guess Ruby's trope is different. There's more that makes her stand out, but that'll just be spoilers.

I don't think abusive mother is a much of a trope. Abusive dads yeah, and step mothers, but not mothers. i rarely see that in fiction, but it might just be the things i'm reading.

For me I’m not sure what tropes I break or fall into, I’m sure I do a bit of both but I don’t consciously think of it I just write and create what I enjoy making. Although my stories always tend to be really weird, so maybe I’ve broken tropes but still have them in it? In my webcomic specifically I’m deconstructing things I’ve seen repeated in stories but I don’t if they are tropes or just my own observations…

Like I guess I was poking at fun of “Mary Sues” but showing that they can actually be really fun and dimensional characters, like with Lady Lock and Miss Butter. I’m just having fun being silly …

some. i write what i like, but then I'll often pick to pieces my own writing afterwards. often times i do like to do things to shake up trends and expectations a little too

I meant do you mean like an actual parent or does it being written as "mother" mean something else! Sorry lol I guess that could have so many meanings. As for reading it, girl I still I need to read Alicia's story and I've barely begun that I've actually followed alot of new stories recently and I find it incredibly hard to stick to any of them even though I really do want to read them. I just don't have the time, especially now with deadlines looking over me HALP

And I guess we have different writing processes then! I don't look at tropes actually hardly ever, I do like analyzing pieces of works but I like emotional aspects of characters and context to history and culture rather than archetypes and tropes. Writing rules are kinda boring to me, and thinking about how it relates in an academic perspective stresses me out lol, I just want to write! But everyone gots there own way about writing, if it helps your process and is fascinating to you keep on with it

And it's "mother" in air quotes, because she just became a child's caregiver, but she's not Essence's biological kid. Adopting a kid doesn't make anyone less of a mother of course, but the circumstances are complicated making Essence a mother to Ayla only part of the time

LOVE this question, really made me think.
It was important for me to never make gender a prominent subject (at least in modern scenes) because as knuckles once said, “You know amy any time someone calls attention to the breaking of gender roles it ultimately undermines the concept of gender equality by implying that this is an exception. And not the status quo.”
Acknowledging that Sadie is a woman who is extremely strong implies that it is despite her gender rather than it not being a factor in her strength.
This goes for the men as well. Women in my story are not praised at the cost of men, “I’m smart for a woman and you’re dumb for a man.” I suppose to put it short, the women are different because it’s never acknowledged that they’re different.
Historically it will be acknowledged, we dealing with 1800s chiz, however in modern day WHO CARES- THEYRE COOL AND THEY ALL HAVE MUSCLES-

@sophialyncoleman Ahh Sonic Boom reference I watched that show too XD.

I think gender roles make their appearance in my stories in subtle ways, but most of the things they deal with or ways they break away from the mold don't have to do with tangible expectations put on them by people in their worlds, more expectations media tends to have for the FL of novels/stories. Especially romances
