What Font do you think would be best for my comic

Hello tapas community, I need some help, I received some feedback a while back about my dialogue being hard to read, so I'm wondering which fonts do you think would fit my comic better and would be easier to read for its style, its more of a manga styled comic in black and white. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I've had a comic completely made with handwriting, the best thing I could say is if you are using handwriting, consider making sure the letters are big enough to read at a reasonable distance from the screen, and they aren't too squished.

for me personally, my "g"s end up looking like an "s" because how I write them, you could probably consider taking how you write letters into account.

otherwise, I'd probably just google "free fonts" or something, and make sure you read the whole copyright thingy on what they can be used for (if you don't make money from your comic, you can use most for whatever)

just open the zip, drop everything on the desktop (or folder, doesn't matter) and right click, hit install, you will have the font on your PC when you go to check for one.

be sure to read the instructions on the site.

sites I used are 1001free fonts and font squirrel, that's where I got mines.

I read a bit of your first episode and I think the font is actually fine! It could be better, but it's definitely readable.
What makes it unreadable is the resolution. I'm not sure what you've done, but the text is incredibly pixelated. If there was a way for you to sort out the resolution, you'd be sorted!

Your compression/resolution is affecting the smaller instances of your font, this likely has something to do with how you're resizing your files. The font itself seems legible when it is larger, though it looks like a font generated from hand writing so the various weights and kerning of the letters is pretty inconsistent.

i actually made my current font using my handwriting @Im_moron, dunno if i have to do it again n make my handwriting bigger?
@Iridescent_Bismuth my resolution is set at 900, do you think it is too high for fonts, what resolution do you use for your comic? Maybe I can try some other resolution

When you say 900, are you talking 900ppi/dpi, or are you saying that your pages are 900 pixels wide?

I draw my pages at 2894 x 4093 pixels (600dpi) and then downsize the page after I've finished it to 940 pixels wide (the max for tapas) I've heard that working with a larger resolution and then downsizing can yield smoother results.

Honestly though, I'm really inexperienced with this. It's just my first comic.

The Problem Is That You Are Making It All with All Capital Letters. It is hard to see where the sentences starts. Caps are good for establishing notes or SCREAMS! But not for the general speech

Hmm i actually never gave that a thought cuz some webtoons I read like GoH use all caps, maybe i'll experiment with it if I see nothing else works

Yes well there are both good and bad examples out there. sometimes people only watch art and don't read. Although it's common sense to read a neat text with right spelling and grammar. especially for the foreigngers - imagine how hard any english handwriting is for other pepople, cause they only learn classic things at school

I would recommend going to Blambot and picking a good, free dialogue typeface: https://blambot.com/collections/dialogue-fonts

The free fonts are completely free for indie creators. You might want to try out a few to see what works well. I also recommend using one that has normal, italics, and bold italics versions (usually bold and bold italics are the same for comic fonts).

Some of the smaller dialogue is difficult to read, so I would recommend redoing it in a more legible font. If you're using Photoshop, you want to make sure the anti-aliasing is set to "sharp" or whichever works best for your format since leaving it as "none" usually makes it look pixelated.

Also a couple more things. It looks like your images aren't in greyscale, so I would also recommend switching them to greyscale since they are black/white. There are also some artifacts leftover from the scan (you can see it better if you tilt your monitor back a bit), so you can try adjusting the levels to help get rid of it.

I'm not sure what program you are using, but if you use Photoshop, it's CTRL+L or Image -> Adjustment -> Levels. Your program of choice probably has this option. With levels, slide the left arrow to the right and the right arrow to the left.

If your program doesn't have levels, it might have curves or threshold which can also work.

oh cool thanks for the link, i'll be testing a lot of them.

You were right my Aa was set as none so now I'll be using sharp.
I'm not sure about the levels,i use photoshop n I always set it at 100 to make the lines thicker, maybe its a bit too high and is making the artifacts show up.

If you have the left arrow set to 100, that seems kind of high. I would recommend making the image greyscale and then adjusting the levels and tilting your monitor to see if there's any grey left in it. You can use the dodge tool and set it to highlights to adjust individual areas (or burn tool set to shadows for the dark areas). You can also use the eyedropper tool to make sure an area is 100% white or black.

Or if you scan at at least 600DPI, you can use threshold which will make the image completely monochrome. But it makes the image pixelated so you need to have a high DPI so when it's sized down it will look smooth.

OH yh I almost forgot to write back, I tried setting the right at 240 and the left at 100 to remove the artifacts while keeping the thick lines, here's an example

I set my printing default at 300 dpi and greyscale, dunno if its better

That looks better! There are still some dots in the white areas. You can clean those up with the dodge tool.
