i actually have more pet peeves designing characters than looking at other characters lol. but if i had to pick my major pet peeve, it's impractical clothing purely meant for fanservice. it's cool if it's just a few characters, but i see this with almost every single female character in any sort of media and it's so aggravating. same for when every character has the same body type, face, skin color, etc.

as for your number three, i actually think it's neat when people try to mix it up and defy traditional associations like that. i mean, that can be overused too, but i don't necessarily see it as someone getting the colors 'wrong'. i have two characters with a yin-yang color scheme because they're the elements of light and darkness -- but neither are male or female, so you can't associate either one with gender.

I really like the red nose design aspect as well HAHA when it's toned down and doesn't stick out too much from the skin it can actually be pretty cute and, I think, it adds contrast and thus brings attention to the face. Again, it's in moderation...like personally, when the blush is red enough for someone to put a Highlight in it, it rubs me the wrong way.

I feel bad attaching "Tumblr" to it 'cause it's a bit reductive. I've seen it even in japanese hentai and, alas, in some professional comics.

To compensate I'll add that I think pink hair is freaking amazing and I'm ready to fight anyone who thinks otherwise ; )

(too) Big chested girls.
Eyes that big, they don't even allow the character to have a forehead.
Foreigners being blonde with blue eyes. (I understand why, but well…)
Cat/animal mouths on human characters, like this -> :3
I do sometimes like animal ears and other accessoires, but not if they always wear it.
Now that I look over the list again, everything mainly happens in mangas haha

Why so? No matter where you live, there's plenty of blonde blue-eyed people from foreign countries out there. :?

Yes that's true, but I feel like they restrict themselves by designing them like that.
A lot of foreigners have brown or black hair too (many have brown eyes, though I only met two people until now who had green eyes…).
Anyways, it's not like the readers wouldn't believe they'd be, for example, french if they don't have blonde hair.
That's what I meant p:

I guess a pet peeve of mine would be when a character outfit is clearly out of place or occ.
Examples would be Orihime from bleach in the sternritter arc:

Previous arcs:

She isn't a sexual character or anything like that. So her choice of clothing here doesn't make sense. It's made worse when Kubo excuses it by saying she wearing it for Ichigo. URGH.

Or in Corpse Party Blood Drive with the addition of new characters. Imo, it's has one of the worse designs.
I start by saying Corpse Party (kind of) followed a "theme" with their character designs. Like most characters either have black/brown hair and a uniform. That's it. With these new characters it feels so deviantart like anime now
What's bugs me the most is Kuon Niwa's design. She supposed to be really skinny but she has huge breast. I feel if you're going to make a character that's a sick and aging rapidly then go all the way and actually make her skinny.
But it's not a huge deal breaker. I just feel it's out of place.

2 months later

Oh and let us not forget the dreaded BOOB WINDOW!
As in a picture with Orihime, which @Maxiachan posted above.
I mean it's pretty uncomfortable type of clothes, especially if you have big breasts.

Oh yay someone revived this thread so I can complain about another peeve of mine I've realized recently:

Plain shirts. Just. plain. fucking. shirts.
Like HOW OFTEN do you HONESTLY see someone walking down the sidewalk with just a SOLID green or yellow t-shirt. With literally no pattern or logo on it. Plane WHITE t-shirts are sort of different, but every time I see just a solid green or yellow or blue shirt that has literally no design on it, I'm just kind of like "please at least put a STRIPE on it or something."
It just makes me feel like everyone is in a TV commercial where any logos or designs could get them sued. Please just put a jacket on them ore a stripe or something on the shirt D:

It's kind of funny, cause unless it's from a franchise I REALLY like, I absolutely HATE designs on my shirts and go out of my way to just find plain shirts with nothing on them. (Even more of a pet peeve for hoodies with zippers at the front if the zippers CUT THROUGH a picture or logo... it just... makes me so angry) Even with my shirts that have pictures on them I mostly only wear them at home. I just... I duno... I just really HATE going out with pictures/logos/patterns or designs on my clothes.

It's actually harder to find coloured shirts with NOTHING on them then you would think, unless they are meant for layering. I remember as a kid I was always angry how it couldn't be how it was like in cartoons, where it was apparently REALLY EASY to find shirts without crap on them, since EVERYONE had them.

So yeah, with that I actually like the plan shirt thing that happens a lot in drawings. It's just... satisfying... I duno lol

I think Vitiligo is probably one part of tumblr's "unique and inspirational" character design. They'll likely be pudgy, neurotic, pink haired, missing a leg, etc.

I feel it works if it fits in to the plot. Like someone is dating someone of the same sex or something natural. Lots of times it's just introduced it follows tropes like: everyone in school hates the gay kid or lol grandma hates trans people.

Well if you got a teen character going through a phase I doubt that needs explanation.

I can see that side of things! But your difficulty in finding plane colored tees just makes it clear...OFF it is to have an entire cast of characters in nothing but plain colored tees (without any layering). At least in a...realistic sense I guess? :'D
I have a lot of plain TANK TOPS that I use for layering, but yeah, I can't think of any time I've actually just...seen a colored t-shirt completely plain for sale in store. Most of the time, you have to order them from sites that have them in stock (to print things on and make them not plain lol).
It's definitely not a matter of me thinking its UGLY to have plain shirts, it's more so along the lines of if I see a whole cast of plain shirts all I can think is "Where did you all find these shirts? Who sold you these?? Did you all collectively decide to order plain colored tees?? You can't find these at fucking Target"

They need to tell me where they shop ;_;

To add to the thread.

Anthro characters specifically ones with fur, wearing clothes with zippers... just... that would really hurt if it got caught. Really... a lot...

@60Six and @kurapikasuki, haha my husband has a bunch of plain colored T-shirts from H&M and he loves them. He rarely wears anything else.

Another pet peeve of mine, when characters have the same damn hairstyle as children in their flashbacks and it's treated as normal.
Like it would be funny if there was a flashback of a kid with a bowl cut, and they have the same bowl cut as an adult though.

Spikey animu and mango hair. You know the one, the kind EVERY main protagonist used to have.
GOD NO

ah.. I hope you don't mind my upcoming series. The main character has heterochromia because she is based off of me. However, her eyes tend to change colors if a specific mood is strong enough. (Again, based off of me) I took some inspiration from Black Butler of one eye having a pentagram and be a different color than the other, but I kept the eyes as normal colors (a.k.a. like mine) and drew the pentagram to look more like a necklace I have..
Also.. I have a character that has "Rainbow" eyes.. what I mean is- her eyes are like the Northern Lights, they have a set of colors that are always changing and blending together.. Her eyes change to plain purple or red in certain situations though..

Actually, with how typical cat-human characters are drawn in anime, they aren't supposed to be placed where normal human ears are. The few that do have them there tend to droop down and give almost a "sleepy kitten" look to it (Chobitz is a good example.. Theres also another anime that has it but I cant think of the name..)
But it does bug me when they are directly on top.. That's not where they're supposed to be drawn.. I may be wrong on this but I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be the base of the ears line up with the base of the eyes.. Or top of where the normal human ears would be..
And that clash of colors thing bothers me too.. unless all the characters and the scenery and such are like that.. then it seems like a drug-trip X'D

O.O glad I drew all my characters that ever wear kimonos (or at least almost all.. I have to re-check) correctly.. I just went by what looks right.. but since you mentioned that I will make any necessary corrections.. or leave the right side on top for certain characters.. (they're technically undead.. so it's sort of a pun..)

i recommend not reading certain scenes of my (upcoming) story then... there are many over-sexualized wolf-anthros.. one is even a hermaphrodite smiley (a.k.a. a he-she.. shemale.. a girl with parts.. just in case u didnt know..)
I am of the Furry community so I do like a well drawn anthro- oversexualized or not- but I do also understand that not everyone likes that ^^
However, my detailed anthros are that way for their own reasons.. whether it's a genetic thing, physical change, or even emotional thing.. they have reasons for their appearances.
All my characters do actually..

Ah, you may like my upcoming story then. All abilities are explained in my story, and all the appearances of my characters are for the reasons of the characters themselves. There may be some "common base of beauty" or whatnot, but I'm making my characters as diverse as the real world.. and I can assure the basically unemotional characters are rare and few smiley

Ah, I do have a bit of a color=good/bad thing in my story.. but only for the VERY bad.. and the VERY good.. why not use cliches when they're the extremes right?
But really I tend to mix a lot of things together so it fits my idea of how to describe my upcoming story: as close to the real world as possible with a twist of Fantasy (specifically non-human characters with supernal abilities)
I have to agree on the virgin vs not virgin bit.. not all virgins are pure, innocent, and morally right
Not all non-virgins are corrupt, evil, and promiscuous.. in fact- most women (and a few men) have their virginity forcefully taken- or are at least forced into having sex with someone.. sad as it is, it's true..
My upcoming story, Hybrid, has many unique characters with detailed appearances, personalities, and backgrounds. Yes, some are over-sexualized, but it's for the reasons of the characters themselves..

Ah.. I see very well what you mean.. I can assure my upcoming story won't be that bad. I have corrupted characters that wear skimpy clothing, and morally good characters that have more of a child-like appearance.. and really the only character I can think of who switches from Frills to Fishnets is one of the craziest characters I have.. and the only reason she goes from Frills to Fishnets is because her and her lover (who is just as blood-crazy as her) both love having kinky sex. They take BDSM/S&M to over-the-top levels. So why not have her dress up like she belongs in a sex dungeon? It's practically what her room looks like. It wasn't too innocent-looking to begin with anyhow.
Now, I did say this was the only character I could think of who switches from Frills to Fishnets.. and stays that way
I have many characters that switch between cute and sexy clothing.. but all in all they're not 100% evil or 100% good

If you have a character who looks like an adult and behaves like a bratty child it's extremely confusing.

...That's the description of a teenager though..
But I do agree with you about adults looking like kids and vice versa.
I have a few characters that would fall under that category, but there are reasons.
No, that reason is not "because Lolicon fans need their dose of fan-service too"
One of those characters in particular is a psychopathic nymphomaniac.. trust me, I don't try to give Lolicons fan-service.. sexualized children is just creepy to me..

You have a problem with the gym uniforms too?!
Ugh it always weirds me out when I see them in anime..
Though.. I will be using it for my story.. or just replace the bottoms with REALLY short shorts... if it's summer that is sweat_smile
As for the skirts.. I have that for some characters in my upcoming story.. but for reasons that aren't fan-based..
I have to agree with you on the shirts.. I hate people over-emphasizing boobs in a baggy shirt.. like- no. stop.

Good thing I put details into all of my characters then sweat_smile
Yes, that includes males
Some are so unique from the males that they are often assumed to be female..
cough

You may like my upcoming comic then..

I actually have cat-humans that WILL cough up hairballs X'D
Really all my animal-humans will act like the animal as much as human
Basically they walk, talk, and speak like humans
But they may fight, mate, eat, or do other things like the animal
Example: my favorite Neko character I created- Kikone "Kiko" Von Nekros is originally from Scotland. She trims and sharpens her nails to be like cat claws. She tends to groom like cats do...... up to a certain point.. She doesn't like rain or being splashed/sprayed with water. She purrs and says nyah, meow, mew, and kyah often. Her favorite food is Sushi (but not until she travels to Japan) and she used to cough up hairballs when she was younger.. like- up to the age of 5..
I have many other detailed characters like her (I just gave a small chunk of information because spoilers)
I do have some very flashy characters, some scantily clad, some rather plain, etc etc.. but it all goes with those characters' reasons

You may like my upcoming story Hybrid then
I'm not a fan of metal bikinis nor can I draw armor... (not very well anyways)
Most facial scars- or really scars in general- are on female characters.. all for reasons.. and not all like their scars.. one character I have has claw marks about her left eye/on her left eyelid.. she doesn't like her scar at first.. but eventually gets used to it and later embraces it's existence
As for the heterochromia.. My main character has it.. BUT she is based off of me.. and her eyes (like mine) tend to change color depending on mood. Normally, she has one blue eye, one green eye.. and the green eye has a pentagram. (Yes its a Kuroshitsuji/Black Butler sort of thing.. but the pentagrams look nothing alike and my character's is in the left eye, not the right)

You might actually like my upcoming story
I did a lot of studying regarding the ethnicity/race/sexuality/etc for my characters
I also have a very mixed family (by that I mean 50 shades of white- I mean- a lot of Europeans in the family (too many to list right now) and a good chunk of Native American)
And I am a pansexual who has done their studying about the different genders and sexual preference labels stuck_out_tongue
Also, I plan on including physical & mental disabilities (seeing as how both run in my family)
So I have a lot of diversity beyond stereotypes in my story stuck_out_tongue

Heels on a female warrior that is supposed to be battle hardened! well actually heels on any women that runs a lot! Have a great time breaking your ankles ladies!

I do actually have one character like this... but he's tiger-themed so I think it fits xD

Utawarerumono perhaps?

Hmm what irritates me..

When the main character is so extremely bland in his design that there's no personality to him at all. Like the pure opposite of Yugi & Co. Usually that means the character is made as an audience insert though, and I tend not to watch those shows because they turn out to be harems most of the time anyway.

Or as I mentioned in another thread: Extremely shy girls wearing revealing outfits. It. Breaks. The. Character's. Logic.

Additions to a design that completely defy logic, reason and/or sense in the story. Not if everything is a bit over the top, it works in-universe. But when you have one random thing, like Mouri Ran's horn... I swear that thing just gets more ridiculous as time passes. xD

Everyone else's hair is perfectly normal though.

Ps. I have no trouble finding plain tees... You just have to look in the basics department of stores like H&M, Bershka, Zara etc. (or Uniqlo, if you're lucky to have one where you live). Trust me, I work in a clothing store haha. I'm in Europe though, it might be different where you live.

That's true, but then again, that's basically the explanation why they have dyed hair. Explanation shouldn't be taken literally, I don't need something like a footnote, really. Just that you somehow get some context on why. (Like, e.g. going through a phase, coming from another planet/having another gen pool, or they had to endure some experiments etc. etc.)
This is more about the anime-like protagonist who is the only one (apart from a few main and rather important side characters) with an uncommon hair colour and it seems like it's not dyed. It's just to immediately spot who's important and who isn't.

Okay, I can see if it's a big square type of heel, that can be handy when you ride a horse/dragon/anything else, but when it looks like something that just came out of Baldinini shop - how about a no?

Running on high heels isn't that hard, given that a) you have a habit b) you run on asphalt and not varied terrain.

Ah. No/ I wasn't thinking of Utawarerumono, but yes that is the kind of cat ears I was talking about. Let me see if I can find the character I'm thinking of...

-after much Googling and re-watching YouTube videos-

AH! I was thinking of Ikaros from Heaven's Lost Property
