What kind of fan base do you want?

what I hoped for from the very start was for people to care about these characters. Not in a "I WANT TO MAKE PEOPLE CRY B/C THEY FEEL FOR THEM" sort of way, just... having opinions about these people, as people. Relating to them or disagreeing with them or liking them or not trusting them.

I too want my readers to feel this way about my characters as, personally, there's a connection there I'd say OC to creator, it's like sending off your child to school and hoping he/she makes friends ^^ Then again, I do like to see people suffer when they see their favorite characters die or something, something I got from the Danganronpa community I guess ^^"

I still remember being very excited when, as a character was introduced by bodily throwing the protagonists out of his home, someone responded to the page with "nevermind, that guy's an ass!"

I recently got a simillar feeling when someone commented on the well being of a character of mine who was placed in a comedically possible danger xD It's so surreal when someone points out a detail that actually was placed there for the intended effect

Make sure you tell people that you're open to this!! Crit without being asked for it can honestly be kind of rude, and not all artists react well to it, so a lot of folks will avoid it unless they know it's wanted.

Lastly, is it cool to just outright ask readers this? :U

Ahaha, there is that, and I've got one person who knows almost the entire story and she hasn't noticed any major holes, so hopefully it's all good xD (At least, no holes that weren't easily patched up). Thanks a bunch! =D

I'm also hoping for as many lesbian readers as possible, given how badly we're represented in any possible entertainment venues.

Actually :U Thinking about it now, lesbians do tend to be over sexualized, too romanticized or even forced? :U The only example of a good relationship working for me at least was Korra and Asami from The Legend of Korra, which neither were a victim to the three flaws ^^"

It's not rare for me to see my reader proposing possible theories and when one comes so close to the truth, I would always get super excited because I feel like I'm doing something right in throwing hints and putting clues as a creator.

its uncommon for webcomics to gain a Fandom, capital F (i can think of maybe three examples?) and theyre extremely stressful anyway.

That's true, I mean, the only other webcomic Fanbases I know are Eddsworld and Zone-Sama ^^"

I think comic fanbase takes a long time to grow, you have to go through self-promote, even weeks of empty days before appreciation.

Lol for Motsuro Project I'd be glad to have a fan base period. I feel kind of pompous saying my readers are "fans", but I appreciate them.
IDK it's just kinda hard to have expectations for your supporters simply because I feel I should be grateful for having them in the first place xD;;

You are right, oversexualization is one of the problems with lesbian representation in comics (and media, in general). Another stupid trope is that lesbians can magically want to have sex or fall in love with men. Yeah, no way, thank you. Or that lesbians are crazy psychopaths. And don't get me started on lesbian characters always having to die at some point. Etc. Etc. Etc.

So it's kind of funny, I've thought about this a lot?

I was kind of an awkward guy as a kid, and making friends online was part of how I got myself together and grew into a decent, if nerdy, adult. A lot of my fondest young memories are of the forums of a particular webcomic where I made friends that are still a big part of my life today.

Part of what really excites me about my comic eventually gaining a broader readership is a chance to prompt a community like that myself, some little ecosystem of art and storytelling and general chat. Ideally I want theory-prone readers that get to know each other over my work.
Of course tumblr replaced forums for the most part so that may never happen anyway but hey, worth a shot.

Check this thread for some of the experiences of other people. Sometimes there will be annoying readers, although some of the experiences aren't from tapastic. I think it will be more common if your subscriber base is big, that's why I don't want to have a big subscriber base.
