It’s said “everything has been done before”, and that’s true to an extent, so I never went into my story with the goal of creating something “unique”. Heck, it’s a fantasy story about people with magic powers fighting monsters lol. That’s as ubiquitous and tropey as it gets.
But I do think my comic is unique because of how it executes these tropes, and this stems from the fact that I’m creating it primarily for myself. Might not be the best path to becoming successful, but I didn’t pick a target audience to market myself to, or a genre that I planned to fit my comic into. It’s just the story that comes naturally to me, based on my life experiences growing up a younger and older sister in a family of 12, observing the changing world and real-life “character arcs” around me, and inspired by every story that shaped me- especially the books that made me want to become a writer.
As a result, it’s my story, an amalgamation of everything I love and always wanted to see in a comic format (but couldn’t find- though amazing comics like little melon’s Sable Curse, Lark & Wren’s Woven, MaiyuArts’ Oasis, and Myoung Rang’s Mage Again contain a lot of the elements I adore, they- as a matter of course- don’t have all of them).
My comic is slow-paced, dramatic, and character-driven, with a large focus on the growth and relationships of the cast- especially the bonds between my sibling protagonists. It has an introspective, heroic main character who wrestles with her inner demons, a slow-burn plot, a serious tone that gets pretty dark at times, elements of fantasy, drama, action, adventure, horror, mystery, and intrigue, as well as some romance and humor, and the artstyle is semi-realistic, not based on anime or any Korean webtoon style. It deals with themes I believe are important to explore (love, sacrifice, family, identity, loss of innocence), and I hold this silly project close to my heart.
It's unique because it’s mine. :]
