I'm glad you brought up zines! One of my fav formats to make stuff in.

One of my "comics" on tapas Romantic Atrocities: Scenes from the Road is actually part of a greater multimedia project spanning zines, music, comics, and straight up books. I've been working on it since 2017 and it's finally coming to some kind of conclusion as a cohesive piece.

The idea is that two boys take turns telling a story about a Midwest to East Coast road trip they went on, where they fell in love and almost died and came back anyway but different. They tell it until the details change, until the story changes, until they are sick of telling it, like as iterations of the same narrative. One of those iterations is of course scenes in comic format.

My thoughts for a physical release would be a shoebox full of these collections of stories and comic scenes and music, complete with artifacts such as fake cigarette boxes and speeding tickets and AAA maps and whatnot. High effort, sure, but fun as all hell to make. (The first iteration of this story came with a map and speeding tickets, not pictured, and of COURSE I'll be continuing that in the final thing.)

Where can I get as many copies of this as possible because that is 100000% fantastic!!! Ugh, I loveeeee epistolary stuff. Just read The Final Girls Support Group by Grady Hendrix, and he had it interspersed between chapters. You are taking it to a whole new level. Do you print your zines yourself? I just began making my own after printing my first comic, a quarter sized book, through a local print shop. It was really fun and high quality but now that I own my own printer and have both computer and nice photo paper the power to draw, write and print my own books right from home is kind of magical. Like you have an idea and in a few hours it can physically be in your hands, like it's teleported straight from your mind to real life. That's why as much as I enjoy being able to post my comic digitally-- it truly is amazing to be able to do that-- I keep the print feel and format. I just prefer it, honestly.

I do everything in house, including tape/CD dubbing and binding. Though when this goes to production I'll either need to get a laser printer (ideal) or I'll have to make some big trips to the copy shop, LOL.

And yeah, epistolary storytelling is half of my practice, so the ability to make it tactile and real is so freaking good. In this case, the epistolary function is limited since the two main characters live next door to each other, but that doesn't mean I can't do Everything Else. Gum wrappers, cigarette cartons, speeding tickets, all that fun stuff. Getting to hold that stuff in my hands is a dream come true, really, in terms of how I like to experience a narrative. Like going through the attic and finding a box full of photos, and having to piece together what happened in May, 1997.

All that said, print is king to me for that reason. And thank you for the kind words! I'll be sure to put Somewhere on Tapas a link to get in on this as soon as it's ready to be sold, hehe.

Ehhhh ... imo the appeal of TvTropes is because of all the tropes, which people already know about and are therefore an entry point to the works they don't know about, whereas my thing is pretty standalone so idk

Tbh I'm mostly just logging my ideas somewhere on the Internet for archival purposes because I'm paranoid and if I accidentally run into someone with similar ideas and they accuse me of copying them, I can point to it and prove I came up with mine independently XD So not really seeking out an audience for it, though of course I wouldn't complain if it happens

I do my best to balance out my work on each comic. I typically do one chapter of each before doing another. What really hurts me is how long it can take. I have a HORRIBLE attention span. There can be days where I can get stuck on one page, or others where I can get many done.

My project here starts off as more of a slow-burn, with a couple issues of increasing tension before the real action starts happening. It's a graphic novel, though.

I fall down the TV tropes rabbit hole for that reason, I know the trope and learn new things or THINK I don't know it then read it and go "Ohhhhh THAT'S what that's called?" And certain things I didn't even consider tropes I realize, wow, we have hundreds of thousands of these hyperspecific story telling shortcuts to cobble together any sort of narrative, and that to me is pretty dang cool.

I also keep meta stuff and world building notes, but I tend to do it via notes in physical note books, random papers and in typed outlines which I've started more seriously collecting and keeping in one place to refer back to. Whereas before, I was writing a lot of notes to get an idea out and then never looking at them again, because the act of taking the note itself was just a way to sort out a thought and not for my personal use later.

That is kind of changing, though I still tend to keep a lot of notes I write once and never look at again as I've solved the issue I was trying to figure out via writing it. A teacher who used to work at my university is doing a show right now with all the meta materials from her recently published book. It looks fantastic and I really want to go. As I've been submitting my portfolio out too, I've learned (and to some extent in college) that these meta materials and notes are realllllyyy important. Not so much because someone could "steal" your idea, but because it shows people how you work.

That's cool, my other project is not on here and probably never will be, but it also diverges a lot from my main comic here genre wise too.

Yes, literally same, my comic Fields on here begins with a Robin Hood-esque heist and is squarely a sci fi, new weird kind of story, whereas my other story is a slower burning supernatural neo noir, and also standalone, whereas Fields is created to replicated a serialized print comic.

Tropes are way cool, and it's great they put a names to story trends because I find looking for works that contain tropes I have a soft spot for a WAY more reliable way to find something I like than genre or something

I also have a lot of unpublished notes, though exclusively digital for ease of editing I just write them down so I don't forget them; at the time of writing I always intend to use them later but I almost never do because I usually end up getting a new replacement idea that makes the old one obsolete (which I guess would be your "I've solved the issue I was trying to figure out via writing it", but delayed XD)

I'm not at all afraid of people 'stealing' my ideas; I'm afraid of people who came up with the same ideas independently (which itself is great) seeing me do similar things AFTER them and then accusing me of stealing THEIR ideas :'D (In fact I have a slight beef with copyright, partly because of this). I do agree though that it's wonderful when we can show people how we work; I love to see how other artists/writers work both because it's really interesting and it informs my own creation process as well. This is one of the best things about being part of an art community imo

Pretty sure my current horror outline is just "I had this idea then had a new one that makes the old one obsolete" lol. I think this needs a name... maybe the hamster in the wheel phenomena, ha.I will keep doing that until the story mutates into something utterly different with some overlapping characters, but that's about it. I guess the issue of that is never getting anything done.
