What to do if you had found work that looks very similar to your own but that isn't a case of plagiarism?

I think also that a lot of stories seem really similar in the beginning but then end up being just so dramatically different from eachother by the end. So maybe this other thing seems close to your stuff now but give it time and you'll guys go completely different ways. It's extremely rare to accidentally write exactly the same story unless it was a pretty cliche story to begin with, which I assume yours is not.

But something my teacher once told me that I like to remember is "everything has been done before but not by you." so don't worry, this hollywood guy probably got inspired by something in his youth that maybe also inspired you. Inspiration runs on a big web of people being inspired by other people, and if it looks waaaay too close, then just...change enough stuff so it's not too samey. but you're probably completely fine.

I've brought this up in other threads but I'm a strong believer in the concept of a shared zeitgeist leading to similar creations and creators. All the things and people that dominate popular culture are a widely shared experience and those influences shape potential creators in very similar ways.

Really, the only reason we don't see much more of it, is the fluctuations in development speed.
