We all know the typical main character types, like:
- the shounen type - airhead but with a golden heart
- the weak underdog, who gains more confidence as time goes on
- the protective one, who will do anything to protect their loved ones
- the walking moral compass, who will not do anything immoral under any circumstances
- the mysterious one, who is always unpredictable even to the readers
- the badass and flawless one and/or Mary Sues
- the cold and calculated lone wolves
- antiheroes of all kind like: the misunderstood douchebags, the natural douchebags, or just people with contriversial/questionable values or straight up villains
-ah, and don't forget the total nutcases
The list could obviously go on and on, as there are countless awesome stories with all different main characters.
Is your protagonist a hero or antihero? Do they drive the story or the story carries them?
For example, one of my webtoons, Switch: absolute (webtoons , tapas)
Has an antihero main character. He is an absolutely terrible person, who only thinks about himself and how he could exploit his newfound ability.
For a reader, I suppose this could be so frustrating to read, but for me he's really interesting to write. And of course, there's lots of opportunity to grow.
My other webtoon's, Prince of the Underworld's (webtoon , tapas) main character is a bit more difficult case...
He acts like an antihero and a hero at the same time, in fact, this inner fight/duality makes him so exciting for me to write.
So bring it on, I'm really curious about what kind of main characters you guys have!
Also, your preferences about main characters. (As you see, I just love antihero-like characters)
