I've heard it compared to a faucet--when you're on the front page the faucet is on and you're getting subs--when you're off then the faucet is...basically off and it's a very slow trickle. Just painfully slow if you aren't doing anything in the spotlight (and I assume that by spotlight you're talking about being big on social media, which I'm not, so I have a lot of expertise in that.) But for me, at least, it's a little easier to land front page than it is to get viral on social media (both are hard though), but you have to make a comic that fits their guidelines--they got a whole thread on what they're looking for.
