I've got 5 volumes of Don't Be Cruel sitting in my bookshelf mainly because of the gorgeous art, however when it comes to Nekota Yonezou I prefer Elektel Delusion. If it ever comes out as an english print i am getting dat shit so fast.
Not too fond of the story itself, at least in the beginning, of Don't Be Cruel. Because uh... rape and blackmail >_>

I also like Ten Count, fucking sue me. I think problematic characters and relationships in fiction can be a good thing as long as they recognize it is messed up, and I think Ten Count does that.

I also like YataMomo. Because it is psychological, fucked up and comedic all at the same time.

I am probably missing out on a lot of "good" yaoi comics because the art ain't my type. When it comes to reading I am very much an art first, story second kinda guy because the main reason I even read to begin with is usually for artistic study.

As for titles, "My Brother's Husband" was a recent one I read that I really enjoyed. Not typically a BL/Yaoi manga but it's really good story about a guy accepting the husband of his recently passed brother and deals a lot with both normalizing gay relationships and touching on ingrained homophobia.

My problem with Ten Count was that it was statutory rape, not to mention Kurose is like the worlds shittiest psychologist / Psychiatric nurse (I forgot witch). As someone who'se been in and out of mental hospitals & open care clinics it was such a pain to read through it. If anyone of my council would've acted even remotely like that I would've sued everything and probably offed myself ew ughhhhh

And like, this would've all been fine really if the characters acted accordingly (and the comic could've been effective horror), but it's all sunshine and rainbows and happy endings =_=;

The art was nice though, and I've liked other stories by the author, but Ten count...Ugh...

Oh wow, always excited to hear someone remembers Kaze to Ki no Uta!! So good!

I worked for a while in the stateside BL publishing industry so I've been through a ton, my favorites were KISS BLUE and Love Control. Both have some great character building and avoid the usual tropes.

For Spanish recs I do know there's an artist on Tapas doing two comics, one labeled BL while the other is a horror (which is probably going to develop some kind of BL later). There are English languages versions of each as well.

Kurose was never Shirotani's official psychologist if I remember correctly? He was a random asshole who came around like "Hey I see you have a problem and it kinda turns me on so- UH I MEAN want help? Me profesh"

It was, however, still rape. Your partner is uncomfortable and you still push on forward = rape.

I saw it as a story of two messed up people ending up in each other's lives and what ultimately came of it. I don't really agree with them staying together, but that doesn't mean I think it was a poor writing choice. Because tbh, in many situations like these that does happen.
I think Kurose simply saying straightforward "I only fell for you because of your disorder" is horror enough in and of itself.

I read it as a very psychological story. And that's not really so much a matter of ignorance to the issues at hand. I got fondled by a doctor once, I've been sexually abused when I was a teen and I've been in an emotionally abusive relationship. Maybe I read it as a psychological horror story simply because it spot on depicts the delusions that victims and abusers alike place themselves in when in situations like that and because I recognize it on a personal level.

tbh the weirdest parts about Ten Count imo is every time a dick shows up. Why did they draw them SO WEIRD??

I get what you're saying, but the author never intended for the story to be horror, it's obviously meant to be a psychological drama, which it's at first. But very early on all of that was thrown in the trash for the common tropes of the genre. And it really shows by the overall theme of it (and how the whole thing just goes into fanservice I think 10 chapters in). The beginning was actually really good by the feeling that the chapters gave off imho. One of the other issues were the inconsistencies with Shirotani's psyche (like his condition wasn't really researched properly I feel like). Idk if you've read the last 10-5 chapters, but it really just goes into typical BL happy ending mode. It's disgusting. And it's not even meant to be like kinda iffy (like how 100% Miyamoto Kano's endings are lmao, they're all like BUT ARE THEY HAPPY!??!?!? It's hilarious), it goes full shoujo.

IMHO the handjob scene is where it all goes downhill. Like the immediate aftermath of it (Not the scene itself, I thought the greyscale was appropriately dark and brooding). It was so dumb and just so far out of touch with what abuse is, I felt like. And after that it's just the same old bullshit about forced misunderstanding-conflict and sadistic semebois that I've read fifty thousand times before.

I am a transgender gay dude and bl/yaoi is the only way for me to express my romanticism and sexuality without having to worry that the person on the other end just wants me for my extra hole.

For some pansexuals it is a stepping stone in their self discovery.

For some gay men it's just their preferred type of fiction.

Some of us don't want real relationships but do enjoy romance in fiction.

There's a multitude of reasons someone could be really into bl just like there are a multitude of reasons someone wouldn't be. At the end of the day, people are just gonna like what they like.

@TheKawaiiGarden I read the trashy ones because they're 100% the same shit as trashy shoujo (meaning, hilarious), but unlike trashy shoujo, trashy BL gets like never serialized so it's nice bite-sized laugh-fest. Shoujo I feel like no matter what utter garbage it is, it's always like 200 volumes long, ain't nobody got time for that.

The good ones I read coz...They're good. I read all sorta mango if it's good. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

At first I was just sick of all the stereotypical shoujo romances featuring a girl that I could not relate to, but still wanted to read something along those lines but minus the girl. Behold, BL, where it's just the same pretty dudes and tropes, but minus the MC being female.

As much as I have read, I eventually did gain a certain taste and standard, but I still read all BL knowing that it's probably not going to get very deep. When the story is better than expected, then that's a pleasant surprise, but I generally read just for the luls, pretty dudes, pretty art, and expect tropes to happen.

I don't hate heterosexual romance stories btw, I just grew very tired of them so I read them maybe 10-20% of the time.

Thing i like about bl are the conflict, and lots of bishonen there... Lol

OH MY- I ADORE Yamashita Tomoko but never came across someone who really knew her works!!! So yes, I second this recommandation. And one of her works is getting adapted into anime!!!
I also second Harada, Scarlet Beriko and Asumiko Nakamura!

As for me… One of my favorite BL is Oni to Tengoku by Oyoshikawa Kyôko and Aga Naomi, but lately I found out this amazing BL called Ore to Atashi to Shinsekai by Kouda En, that is both cute and angsty, with a perfectly well balanced amount of sexy, and soooo touching. Sadly, only a few chapters are translated, with 3 volumes (on going) in Japan. I've read all of them, and I can't recommend it enough!!!

Also not my favorite and a little less famous, but a really good author that always makes me laugh is Sangatsu Masao. All of their works, with NO exception, have characters with glasses, and they're all funny in a very unexpected way, yet very cute and calming.
