I've had no luck with instagram, twitter, etc. for years. I think the main thing that I've been doing wrong all this time is engaging with users. It seems like a no-brainer but I didn't get it for the longest time. It's also not a silver bullet either. You need to expend a lot of time and effort into it, around the same time if not more than the time you put into the actual comic. Good luck!
