I'm a 4. I work full time as a concept artist/art director at a video game studio, then it's comics all night. Someday I'll jump off to comics full time, but for now the security of a monthy paycheck, health insurance, and the ability to do a clean switch from working at the office during the day to working on comics at my home studio (as opposed to freelance where you're tempted to always be on the clock) keeps me in the 9 to 5 life!
Still I have two published books, a third on deck, and then my comic Banquet on tapastic which right now is...my free time comic? Is it weird to procrastinate on your published comic by...making a whole nother comic!?
I definitely remember the days I was just dabbling, though! I started trying to make webcomics in high school (more than 10 years ago!) and I learned a lot about keeping a schedule and how to draw and pace a story and who knows what else. I'm definitely proof you can go from scribbling comics on the back of math homework to published pro though! Just takes time and bullheaded stubbornness >
