This is something of a pet peeve but why do people not research very simple, obvious things? And I'm not talking about things like "you didn't do the right calculations and now your planet's gravity vs its size is completely wrong" because the general audience doesn't care about that. I'm talking about very simply, obvious things. This often occurs when people set their stories in a country that isn't their own. Like one that really irks me that you see a lot in fanfiction and is creeping into original works: Japanese high school but it looks and works just like an American high school (also happens with British schools, looking at you Harry Potter fandom). It's very simple to research these things but people just don't. Another is basic ages for important mile stones like age of consent, age you can drive, age you can drink, age you can leave school ect. These are so easy just type "what age can you X in Country Y" into a search engine. Another thing is basic injuries or illnesses. Nothing complicated but if you've broken your arm for example, it takes around six to eight weeks without complications for it to recover. So, without some magic/science to help it heal, a few days isn't realistic, so just call it a strain or something. It's not hard to find these things out.
I can forgive this in fanworks, but in original work that I'm expected to believe you're taking seriously it stinks of laziness to me and is a quick way to make me drop because you're obviously not willing to even put five seconds of research into your piece.
So why do people no research the little things? Is it laziness? Am I being too harsh? Do they think people won't notice? Do they just think it's not important so why research it?
