Personally, I love BL due to the avoidance of gender dominance, unlike in other romances, where the female are tomboyish, or females trying to prove that they are equal to/ superior to men, or extremely weak female characters... that really pissed me off. At the time, I felt like if I read one more F**ing comic/manga/manhua/manhwa/story that plays on these trope I'd ---. I mean, at the time at least, like 10 odd years ago.
In BL, it doesn't feel degrading when it's two guys, (partly because well, bias), but it's true that many BL don't play too heavily on the dominance of roles when they fall in love ( minus the shitty majority of plots around 1990s-2000s Japanese BL that has tropes like rape, all powerful male seme, and straight guy or closet gay that is a piece of trash. ), many Japanese ones do, probably so the reader could insert themselves there.
Nowadays, the Korean and Chinese BL has become increasingly more popular than the Japanese ones, for good reason too. Korean and Chinese BL, tend to have more depth in their plot, which are more realistic, more heart-wrenching, and better developed (of course there are some plots which are absolutely brainless, with an illogical "fall in love" reason and pure fluff, but that appeals to those who just want the dopamine from such stories) , Japanese BL feels like multiple copy-paste stories and are underdeveloped partly due to the fact that Japanese BL magazines are mostly monthly ones, and they'd only have around 7 chapters, whereas the Chinese and Korean ones are much longer, have more competition as they are mostly posted on online sites, and don't have the complication of Japanese printed magazines.
The Bl on Tapas also feels well-thought out, and have a more "western"(?) feel to it. The BL here brings up much more different tropes and social issues than the Asian ones, and are pretty unique too, it feels like more western LGBT issues and identity, the change in different partners are also unique, as the more popular Asian ones would always stick with one partner (of course there are also harem BL).
Also, for a more basic reason, it's just well, cute, to see two guys fall in love. Double the eye candy, and with the added love and care between the two characters (minus angst stories), removal of the female vs male issues, it just feels more lighthearted.
