Let us try it! The novel should be out next week, might as well give a little teaser
Clarissa was walking through the forest, in search of these rare plants she needed for her next experimental potion. She didnât know this part of the forest well, and lost in her thoughts as always, she didnât see the hole under her feet that suddenly swallowed her.
âOh come on, seriously? A hole? A cave? And none of my feathers with me? Thatâs a monday morning all rightâŚâ She proceeded to explore her surrounding while mumbling a very impressive list of curse and swear words in 3 different languages, one of which hadnât been spoken for over 2 centuries.
âOkay, a dead guy with his wallet, his knife and a rotten apple core⌠Gotta get out of here fast. Whatâs this smell? Sulphur? Yes, it could be sulfurâŚâ She inspected the walls of that cave closely, and nodded. Sulphur indeed. Interesting. Then she noticed that the poor fellow over there had started digging a sort of tunnel to try and get out of this deadly situation. It was going slightly upwards⌠She had the beginning of a plan.
âPlease tell me the guy had a cigarette addiction or something⌠Yes! Matches! Iâd rather he had a lighter but this will work. Now, to work.â
Clarissa started collecting a few fallen rocks, and used the knife to carefully pry a few more out of the walls. She didnât have all she needed but she was a clever gal, sheâd find a way to grind these rocks to little bits and dust.
âI liked that dress, itâs such a shame⌠Oh well, canât help it.â She used the dress to collect the bits of rock and as much of the sulphur dust as she could, and when she thought she had enough, she disposed it as a trail leading to the end of that half dug tunnel. You donât want to burn the part where you stand, that would do no good.
She made a small pile at that end, making sure there was enough to make a decent explosion, or at least a nice fire that would bring the walls and ceilings down. It was a risky plan, but the only one she could think of. When that was done, she returned to the cave, grabbed the match box and opened it. âOnly 3? Oh come onâŚâ
The first match didnât light up. Of course. There was a wetness around that had moistened the wood, making it bend and wasting it. âTwo more⌠The universe will certainly not have that sort of humour, right?â The universe thought of it for a moment, then decided it wouldnât be so fun now that she knew of its plans. The second match took fire.
She very carefully took the lit match to the beginning of the trail she had made, and set it on fire. The reaction wasnât long, the whole trail igniting and the small pile at the end of the tunnel exploding, taking the walls down with it and revealing an opening to the outside. The collapsed rocks around made for a nice staircase.
Clarissa smiled and waited for the fire to burn itself out, remaining safely in the cave under the hole she had fallen into. Smoke exited through that hole, and if she positioned herself right she could still breathe. When the fire was almost done eating away at the walls, she decided that it would be safe enough. She removed her dress, since it was still covered in sulphur dust, and walked almost naked to the makeshift stairs. âI hate mondaysâŚâ
