I think those that asked you to work on the lighting/shadows were right. Everything else, is basic drawing concepts, not really related to a "flat" look. Every image has a light source. You should imagine a strong one somewhere in the scene and use that as a guide.

Hard Drive failure. Bad enough on its own- worse when it's your fault. The side panel on my computer was open because of the heat and I spilled soda in the case. Lost a lot of material. Lesson learned.
